Wednesday Distance Hikes (progressively longer each time) @ WARREN WILSON

This is a cross posting from:

For folks interested in distance hiking, join organizer for regular Wednesday hikes (weather permitting), beginning with an 8 mile hike and progressively increasing each week by 2-4 miles up to  24-28 miles at the end of the cycle on May 22. Organizer of Mountains-to-Sea trail club is training for a 28 mile hike on June 1st and invites interested persons to hike with her as she trains. The pace will be a 20-30 minute mile, varying in speed (much slower on hills and faster on straight-aways).

These hikes will typically occur on the Warren Wilson trails for varied scenery and a combination of hills and flat stretches. Participants will park and meet at the river trailhead at the bridge on Warren Wilson College Road and walk from there each week. Hikers should pack snacks, supplies, and water. Meals will be left in cars where hikers will stop regularly for meals.

The schedule will be as follow, modified as needed if cancellations occur because of weather:

April 10: 8 miles
April 17: 12 miles
April 24: 15 miles
May 1: 18 miles
May 8: 20 miles
May 15: 24 miles
May 22: 28 miles

Hikes begin at 8 a.m. for most hikes.  Toward the end of the schedule and the longer hikes (May 15 and 22), hikes will begin in the dark (around 4:30 a.m.) and use head lamps.

Interested persons should be seasoned hikers already; should be able to make a commitment to most of the hikes (skipping no more than one in a row); be working on a fitness plan during the off-dates (resistance training, aerobic training, etc.); and have a backpack to carry water, snacks supplies (preferably with about 8-10 pounds of additional weight in the beginning to build up strength for the longer hikes).

If you have questions just email the organizer.
