Craggy Gardens MODIFICATION - 7 miles Moderate

After several emails and reading more trail reviews I am changing our route. We will still start at Visitor Center (still meet up at Folk Art Center) and start on Mountain to Sea Trail (440) but will not do Douglas Creek Fall trail but stay on MTS trail to Glassimine Overlook and return on same trail - about 7 - 8 miles. Douglas Falls trail reported as for experienced hikers and very rough rocky trail.

Object of this hike is to view Craggy Gardens area. so I am changing route. After this hike, if the group wants, we can drive about 1 mile up the BRP to Craggy Dome parking lot and do 1.7 mile RT hike to observation area with 360 views.

I think this will be more enjoyable hike.

We will keep a good pace,

YOU MUST HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE - may be a lot of people driving parkway and in this area as is peak time so we will deal with  a crowd if there is one. Also I have not done this hike so mileage may be off. Would be great if someone who has done this hike will post comments.

Meet at lower parking lot of Folk Art Center at 9:15, leaving promptly at 9:30

Some info:

These high elevation summits are home to spectacular floral displays. June and July are usually prime times to view the pink and purple blooms of rhododendron, but don’t despair if you miss the peak bloom. Violets, blackberry, May-apple, and Turkscap lily burst onto the scene with color in this high-altitude portion of the Parkway.

Sorry, getting in late from social event. Don't think I will make it up early.

My sister will be attending rather than me. She does not want to sign up for Meetup but is in town visiting and would love to go hiking while I am in a class on Saturday. Her name is Virginia Nelson.

We will form carpools at Folk Art Center. Not sure of distance from Folk Art Center to Craggy Gardens, maybe 20 miles, not sure.

Julie - One never knows. If we do 2 MPH then 8 miles or so is 4 - 5 hours on trail with lunch and some viewing stops. Maybe back at Folk Art Center by 4:00 but I just don't know. people have to be flexible. I know is better to be able to plan evening if you have approx. time...but I'm not sure as I have never done this hike.

Folk Art Center: MP 382; Craggy Picnic area: MP 367.6; Craggy Visitor Center: MP 364.6. Less than 20 miles but will take 25-30 minutes since BRP speed limit is 45 mph.

Sounds like a great hike. How far of a drive? Well we be car pooling? I have a Jeep Wrangler so I do enjoy driving. I can take 2/3 people.
