AT from Sam's Gap South to Devils Fork Gap - 17 miles (Moderate to Strenuous)

Let's hike the AT on the NC/TN border from Sam's Gap south to Devils Fork Gap.

Distance: 8.5 miles in and  8.5 miles back.

Difficulty: This hike goes up and down constantly and is mostly moderate with a few strenuous short sections.  Make sure that you have the physical ability to do this hike!!! If you haven't hiked at least 10 miles in the last month this may not be the hike for you and I may e-mail you to see if you feel up to the challenge.

Dogs?: As long as your dog is friendly to both people and other dogs, feel free to bring it, but also please have a leash with you as we will hike on or near roads that may have cars on them.

Water:  It is recommended that you bring at least 2 liters of fluid per person, more if you bring a dog.

What else to bring: Lunch and/or trail snacks. We'll have lunch at the turnaround. And of course wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather conditions which may be warmish.

Hike Description: Mostly the hike is a fairly gradual climbs and descents on a well-marked trail through a fairly dry hardwood forest. There are not many long range views as we are within the trees for most of the hike.  We will pass a small cemetary along the way and probably have lunch at the turnaround point.

Thanks Forest for putting this together. Would love to do it again in the winter or early spring when it's less humid and the foliage is off the trees to give more views.

Great section of trail. I would definitely rate this as strenuous. The double monsoon made it even more challenging.

Sounds like I made the right decision to turn around when I did.

hey folks. i am very sorry but i won't be able to make it tomorrow. i've been sick as a dog the past couple of days! fever, sore throat, full-body ache... i was hoping to get better in time for the hike but it just didn't happen. very disappointed! i was very much looking forward to this... my +1 though, emily, she said she intends to make it. she might even bring another person along, in order to make up for my absence. i hope you all have a great time and hope join you again soon.

I can't make this but I want to say hi to Forest. I graduated with a degree in Physics from UNCA in 1997. LOL probably the oldest NTA to graduate from that department!

Beth, this hike is in the opposite direction of the Big Bald hike you did earlier, a bit longer but not as steep. Probably the same degree of difficulty given the longer distance...

On second thought, I'm probably not ready for this hike. Would like to do some with less miles and prep for this kind. Thanks for the heads-up, Forest! (darn)

Imagine 4 experienced hikers armed with 2 GPS and maps headed to Big Bald....only to find themselves a few hours and several miles later going in the wrong direction...ending up at dumb ass bald instead :)

This hike heads south from Sam's gap in the opposite direction of Big Bald, so lunch should be around the Devil's Fork Gap area.

I would love to do this as I have been hiking 13.5 miles three times a week. Took a fall three weeks ago and hurt my hip so I will have to pass for now. Inclined to do it anyway.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
