Let's hike to Slate Rock and Pilot Cove! This hike includes a fairly steep initial ascent to a gorgeous view from one of the great plutons (rock domes) in our mountains, as well as a long, slow descent next to a rushing river. There are several water crossings, some with bridges, and some with rocks. Nothing difficult. Then, we walk back on Yellow Gap Road about a mile to the cars.
Asheville folks are encouraged to carpool from there before arriving at Bi-Lo. Please feel free to arrange that by messaging each other on this page. To get to Bi-Lo, take exit 40 (airport) off 26 and turn right onto 280, going about 16 miles. The Bi Lo is on the right, at the intersection of 64/280/276. It's a large shopping center. Please park on the far side next to the Pizza Hut. I have a blue Forester and my number is[masked]-4111. When we leave there we'll caravan in as few cars as possible up 276 to Yellow Gap Road, then about five more miles to the trailhead.
We'll take our time on Slate Rock, maybe eat lunch there. On the way down, there are some spots where we can wade or cool our feet in the water. We should finish around 3, but please allow for flexibility here. Dogs are welcome, but please keep in mind Slate Rock is a falling hazard! Please have your dog leashed and under control.
