A hike in the Smokies to Charlie's Bunion - 9 miles - Moderate to Strenuous

Let's hike to Charlie's Bunion in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. This hike is rated as a "moderate to strenuous" out and back and is expected to be approximately 9 miles. This trail has the Smokies character with a great view at a rock outcropping called Charlie's Bunion. Mt. LeConte can be viewed to the southwest from this overlook. Please be sure of your abilities before signing up for the hike.

We will meet at Earthfare at Westgate Parkway at 8:30 AM, arrange carpooling and depart for the trail by 8:45. It is approximately a one hour and forty-five minute drive to the trailhead. I anticipate arriving at the trailhead around 10:30.

We will break for lunch at the rocky overlook with a fantastic view so be sure to bring your favorite food and plenty of water. I don't plan on going at a race pace and plan to take enough time at the overlooks to soak it all in. For the dog lovers, I'm afraid dogs are not allowed in the Smokies.

We should be back to Newfound Gap about 4:00 PM and return to Earthfare by 6:00 PM. These are not definite times but just estimates so plan accordingly so we do not need to rush back for any appointments or other engagements.

Are we meeting at Earth Fare or Ingles on Long Shoals? It does say both. I'm assuming Earth Fare but just want to clarify for others.

I'm living in Waynesville now so it might be better for me to meet at the trailhead. Can anyone give me a location so I can check my driving route to the trailhead? Thanks!

Billy. It's basically about halfway between Cherokee and Gatlinburg on 441 at Newfound Gap. Huge parking lot with likely a lot of cars so you can't miss it. Directions from Waynesville - https://maps.google.co...

Thanks Tom! As it turns out I have to wind up back in Asheville tomorrow evening so I will probably meet at Westgate for the carpool. If I'm not there in the morning you can expect me at the trail head (blue Jeep Wrangler).
