Slate Rock/Pilot Cove ~7 miles moderate

  • August 18, 2013 · 9:30 AM

RSVPs open 9:00 PM Thursday

This is same hike Carrie did a few weeks ago. See webpage below. We will hike the opposite direction, slow ascent, steeper descent and finish hike along Forestry road to cars.

PLEASE PLAN TO BE AT BREVARD BI-LO BY 9:30 as you plan your own carpools from Asheville.  Maybe get together at the Ingles on 191 across from Biltmore Square. Use this webpage to post and email each other.

Let's hike to Slate Rock and Pilot Cove! This hike includes a gorgeous view from one of the great plutons (rock domes) in our mountains,  There are several water crossings, some with bridges, and some with rocks. Nothing difficult. Then, we walk back on Yellow Gap Road about a mile to the cars.

Asheville folks are encouraged to carpool from there before arriving at Bi-Lo. Please feel free to arrange that by messaging each other on this page. To get to Bi-Lo, take exit 40 (airport) off 26 and turn right onto 280, going about 16 miles. The Bi Lo is on the right, at the intersection of 64/280/276. It's a large shopping center. Please park on the far side next to the Pizza Hut. I have a silver  Toyota Highlander and my number is [masked]. When we leave there we'll caravan in as few cars as possible up 276 to Yellow Gap Road, then about five more miles to the trailhead.

PACE WILL BE BRISK....we will have leisurely  lunch on Slate Rock dome. We should finish around 3, but please allow for flexibility here. Dogs are welcome, but please keep in mind Slate Rock is a falling hazard! Please have your dog leashed and under control. Also we must take as few cars as possible so I prefer not have dogs along unless it is a must for you.

This is a "Craig Hike" so flexible attitude required. There is one tricky trail intersection but I have done this hike twice so think will not miss it...well...probably not miss it....

If anyone from Asheville wants to carpool, we could meet at the Ingles on Long Shoals at 8:50 a.m. The one near Biltmore Park and I26. If so, please post here. Otherwise, I will see you at BiLo!

Just got off the wait list and I would love to come. Any chance you might stop over in West Asheville to pick me up? Happy to contribute gas $$.

Hi Sonia! I'm sorry - I live south and wouldn't have enough time this AM to get to West Asheville and then to BiLo on time. Anyone else live on that side of town who could give Sonia a ride? If you could get to Ingles, I could take you from there.

Craig...I really wanted to do this hike however with the prediction of 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon, I have to back out and want to allow someone on the waiting list the opportunity to go.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
