Bear Wallow Mountain afternoon hike

  • September 15, 2013 · 3:00 PM
  • Ingles

It's been a while since I've been able to lead a hike but now with the new car and a little time, it's time to head back out!

Who: Anyone's welcome to join us on this hike, leashed dogs are welcome as well.

What: BearWallow hike and exploring

When: we will meet at the Ingles in Fairview at 3 and leave promptly at 3:15.

How:

We're heading out to one of my favorite local non-waterfall hikes.

It is a shortish hike with a GREAT payoff! Views galore (including Lake Lure)

here's a good description according to: http://www.hikewnc.info/trailheads/bearwallow-mountain/:

Right now, there is one excellent trail at Bearwallow Mountain (called the Bearwallow Mountain Trail), and by combining it with the gravel road which was traditionally used as the route to the top, you can make a great loop hike. The trail is beautifully constructed with some nice rock work, as it switches back and forth across the western ridge leading up to the summit. The trail is moderate overall, 1/2 mile in length, and moderately steep, with some obstacles in the trail (mostly rock and log steps). The gravel road is about the same, but with a smoother, gravel surface.

Hi, I never got a response on the exact Ingles location. Is it the one on Charlotte Hwy? Could someone let me know for future hikes. Thanks so much, sorry I missed it. It looks beautiful.

Having a wicked allergy attack today, not sure I can make it. But I'm hoping to be there! And which Ingles is the Fairview Ingles? I looked online and they don't list for for Fairview, but there is one on Charlotte Hwy, which seems close to Fairview. Is that it?

If anyone can get in touch with Joy Putnam before Sunday. I tried to e-mail her about car pooling and did not get a response. She said she would be in front of Ingles. I don't want her to be waiting for me. Thanks

Once we meet in Fairview, we'll arrange carpools. This is to limit the amount of vehicles at the trail head.

I can carpool from West Asheville

    September 11, 2013

  • gina m.

Does anyone want to carpool from West Asheville?

    September 11, 2013

  • Chris

    Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I've posted so I forgot a few things.

All the organizers are volunteers (including me) so this means we are using our own time and resources to provide these great hikes for you. I listed a link to the hike in the description. Anything that I did not cover, SHOULD be found on that link. I do this so I do not receive multiple comments, phone calls, and emails about the same question.

What you can do to help is if you have a question about a hike or event, research the answer and put it in the comments section on the meetup page. Please do not send the organizer multiple emails, phone calls, or comments wanting answers to questions that are accessible on the Meetup page.

also a quick reminder: Please bring:

    $5 cash for carpool drivers
    camera
    extra water
    snacks if desired.

Thanks and we'll see you on the trail!

    Chris

If I did Sam's Knob, I should be able to do this one, right? Will you be combining it with the gravel road, or just be doing the trail only? Estimated length? Sorry for so many questions :-)

    September 10, 2013

    • Sammy F.

Chris, I did this in May, and my smart phone app logged it as 2.2 miles, 524 ft elevation gain if you do it as a loop--up the trail and over to the radio towers, then back down the road. Parking is pretty limited at the trailhead, though, so we need to carpool to the trailhead from Ingles.

It does I did this hike last year. However it's not difficult AT ALL and they views are lovely.
