Weekly hike with Chris: Looking Glass Rock

  • Feb 19, 2011 · 10:00 AM

A group favorite and a landmark in NC, Looking Glass Rock! The hike will be about a total of 6.4 miles (3.2 miles out and back) , we'll have a blast! Expect to go at a leisurely pace and sticking with the group, there will be many photo opportunities, so bring your camera, a lunch, extra water, a towel, and a friend! We will meet at the Long Shoals Ingles parking lot at 10:00 am and will depart at 10:15 sharp. If you have any questions or can't find me, utilize my contact info: (828)[masked] [masked] Thanks and we'll see you on the trail! Chris

Awesome hike and great day for it! Nice company on the hike too. Still sore from it, though--it's not a "moderate" level hike, but should be rated as "difficult."

I love being outdoors and want to hike more. This was quite a challenge for me, but loved every moment of it. One of my goals is to get in better shape. I especially like knowing I can bring one or both of my dogs on the next hike I join. Does anyone know how the older gentleman faired? He was amazing, but I was worried about him.

A challenging but incredibly rewarding rocky and root infested scramble up the mountainside to a sunny lunch on the largest rock I've ever seen. What beautiful views, what a beautiful afternoon. Thanks everyone!

Chris, there are 5 other organizers signed up for this hike. One of us should be able to lead it if you can't make it. (Not me, since--believe it or not--I've never done this particular hike.) Glenn is right--take care of your knee!

I am going to try my best not to cancel. My knee has been killing me lately with blinding intermittent pain. I will keep everyone posted closer to Saturday.

although i have done this one in the past, due to my knee issues last week, i am going to have to skip it.. want to get on some other trails first that are less graded to make sure my knees don't give out again.... so bummed, i really wanted to go on this one!! Have a great time.. looks like the weather will be a 10!!

My guess is that we'll be back at the Ingles at about 3:30 or 4 pm. When I plan hikes, I estimate the time at a normal walking pace, about 2 miles per hour, or 1 mile every half hour. Add in another 1/2 hour or so at the top to eat lunch. Then add in 45 minutes each way driving time to and from the Ingles.

*Gil, Chris,(The Organizer) will hike this at a steady, casual pace and will make sure that all hikers have the time they need to complete it. The hike will end when all hikers are through. There are never any time limits on any of his hikes.

"Looking Glass Falls"- Difficulty: MODERATE It requires a constant climb all of the way up, so make sure you are in good physical condition before tackling this trail. Numerous switchbacks may tempt you to take shortcuts, but this causes a great amount of damage and erosion, so please stay on the trail. The last mile is steep, and the view seems to come from nowhere as the: trail tops out and you gaze across a wide valley to high balds and the Blue Ridge Parkway in the distance.

**I thought I would post this to try to limit the amount of "ill-prepared" hikers/walkers. This is a quick run-down of this hike. Read through it and make a wise decision.**
