Camp Daniel Boone to Shining Rock -- Cancelled

I want to go hiking in the Shining Rock area and the weather looks pretty good for Sunday. Since the hike is in a wilderness area, it is limited to 10 people, and there are no signs or trail markers. Only experienced, in-shape hikers should sign up for this hike.

I want to take the Art Loeb trail from Camp Daniel Boone and hike up through the Narrows to Shining Rock, have lunch there, and then take the Little East Fork Trail back down to Camp Daniel Boone.  This is about a 13 mile loop hike and there is about a 2800 foot altitude gain going up.

We will meet at the Cracker Barrel off of Smokey Park Highway at 9:00am and leave by 9:15am to drive to the trailhead (about 45 minutes).

We will keep a good pace and try to finish by 4 to 4:30pm.

Friendly dogs are welcome.

What to bring:

water

lunch, snacks

rain gear (just in case)

camera

head lamp

a donation for your driver to help offset the cost of gas

If the weather looks good, are you going to reschedule for this coming Sunday?

The weather is looking very poor. I think this is the time to cancel the hike for today. Sorry, but rain and cold together is too much.

I agree, and the wind is pretty strong too. Love this hike, but not in this weather.

Precisely! I dropped out an hour ago. Wind and radar can speak loudly. Look forward to another time.

I am also keeping an eye on the weather. If it is pouring rain I will cancel. If it is light showers I will probably continue with the hike. Stay tuned ...

Am watching the weather. Looks to be chill, which is fine, and rainy, which is less so. In my book.

Would it be okay to meet you at the trail head? I'll be coming from Cherokee.

Awesome. Is there parking at the actual trail head or do you plan on parking in the larger lot near the lake?

      March 21, 2014

    • Forest D.

There is parking on the side of the road next to the trailhead.
