Let's start Spring with a bang--Looking Glass Rock! The hike will be about a total of 6.4 miles (3.2 miles up and 3.2 miles back).
We will go at a moderate pace, keeping the group together, and there will be many photo opportunities along the way. We won't race to the top, stopping every now and then for rest or photo breaks, but please also try not to lag too far behind. This is NOT an easy hike. I expect to reach the top in about[masked] hours, or about a 2 miles per hour pace, and we will have lunch at the top.
Meetup Time and Place: Ingles, Long Shoals Road, 9:00 AM, form carpools, depart by 9:15 AM. If you want to meet at the trailhead, please say so in the comments when you RSVP. We will probably get to the trailhead between 10:00. Be sure to keep your RSVP up to date if a waitlist.
Brevard folks can arrange car pooling from Bilo and leave by 9:40.
Please contribute gas money to your driver.
Hike Difficulty: Difficult to strenuous--please be sure that you have the physical ability to complete this hike--it is about a 1,700 foot climb in 3.2 miles, or about 531 feet per mile. I estimate this to be about a 3.8 - 4.0 out of 5.0 scale, with 1.0 being an easy hike, and 5.0 being the most extreme, strenuous hike.
What to Bring: Lunch or trail snacks, extra water, camera/smartphone, appropriate hiking clothing and shoes for the steep terrain and weather, sunblock, a hat. Hiking poles may be especially helpful on the descent.
What to wear: Although it's supposed to be mostly cloudy and 70 degrees on Saturday, it's usually about 10 degrees cooler on top of Looking Glass rock. Be prepared!
What about my Dog? Friendly, well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.
What time will we be back? Estimated time no later than 3:30 or 4:00 pm
Thanks, and we'll see you on the trail!
