Max Patch to Lemon Gap (and back)

We will meet at 8:30 am in the Ingles parking lot and do introductions and arrange how we will be carpooling to the trailhead.  We will leave promptly at 8:45 am.  We should be at the trailhead around 9:45am.

Make sure if you are carpooling, that you bring $$cash$$ for the driver!!

Highlights: This A.T. summit provides some of the best views in the southeast
Near:    Hot Springs, NC
Scenery:    4 Stars
Distance:    9.5 miles round trip
Elevation Gain:    2422 ft
Hike Time:    5.5 hours
Difficulty:    Moderate
Trail Condition:    Well maintained trail
HikeType:    Out and Back

Summary: There are many variations to enjoy Max Patch. This is the lower loop of Max Patch to Lemon Gap and resting at the Roaring Fork Shelter for lunch. Except for the dramatic approach to Max Patch this section of the AT is mainly rolling soft hills that a novice hiker would not realize the 10 miles or so you would log at the end of the day. Once you reach the summit of Max Patch (hopefully a clear day) the 360-degree views will simply overwhelm you! Bring lots of film you'll be glad you did.

Directions to trail head:  I-40 to Exit 7 Harmon Den (NC). From the west, turn left at end of exit ramp onto gravel road. From the east, turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto gravel road.  Follow this road for about 6 miles then turn left until it ends. Turn left onto Max Patch Road, the parking area is about 2.5 miles on right.

This is a dog friendly hike, as long as your dog is friendly!!

Wow, that was a bit more of an adventure than I planned on...and it ended with a little girl with an ice cream cone and kittens...totally surreal. But now I can say I have been to Max Patch.

Beautiful scenery, an empty gas tank, and anarchic undertones. Good job Tracey for bringing the herd back safely.

Multiple backtracks, gorgeous weather, complicated personal relations, a record dog turnout in both numbers and diversity, and a dramatic backwoods car finish on fumes. What's not to love? Five stars with a bullet.

So this may sound like a stupid question, but if we are on the waiting list, is it worth taking the gamble and showing up, just in case some rsvp'ers don't?

@Mandy-There will be Carpooling at the Ingles on Brevard Road. You will have no problem at all finding a spot in someones Car/Truck/SUV. Be there at 8:30 and by 8:45, you should be well on your way to the Trailhead in someones vehicle. =)

@Mary-My Humble Suggestion is to quit using Mapquest for anything and instead use Google Maps. Mapquest is insanely horrible and has led many a people astray.
