We'll take the Little East Fork Trail from Daniel Boone Scout Camp up to Shining Rock, have lunch at Shining Rock, and come back down the same way.
We'll keep a good pace with few breaks.
This is rough, unmarked trail, often muddy, with a few stream crossings. Steep uphill all the way up, downhill all the way down. Winter hiking presents additional challenges (snow, ice, wind, etc.). You must be an experienced winter hiker, and know what to wear/bring, in order to participate. You also must have recent experience hiking at this distance to participate.
Total distance: about 12 miles RT
Elevation gain: 2500 ft
Trail condition: rough, muddy, not blazed
Although this hike should be a challenge, the Little East Fork has become one of my new favorites. It heads up the ridge along a creekbed, with waterfalls and moss formations along the way. Shining Rock is a big chunk of glittery quartz, and a nice place to break before heading back down.
Please be aware that I may contact you to inquire about your experience if you're new to the group and/or if I haven't hiked with you before. If I don't hear back from you I may change your RSVP to 'no.' Particularly with the extra challenges of winter hiking, I need to feel confident that everyone is prepared for this hike.
