Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve, ~6.5 miles, Moderate

Distance:  ~6.5 miles RT

Trail Type:  Out & Back

Difficulty:  Moderate

Elevation Gain:  1,160’+

Directions to trailhead from INGLES <--- Link

The 373-acre Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve (managed by the Heritage Trust Program of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources), which is a wonder nestled within a pristine mountain gorge. The Eastatoe (pronounced “EAST-a-toee”) Creek Trail is relatively easy for most of the way, but drops precipitously down into the gorge for its last .5 mile. Located at the end is the Eastatoe Gorge Falls, which is also known as ‘The Narrows’.

The forest teems with large beech and hemlocks as well as wildflowers such as partridgeberry and jack-in-the-pulpit. Switchbacks make the going a bit easier, and stairs are provided where the trail descends/ascends more steeply. The Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve is home to a beautiful stream filled with naturally reproducing rainbow trout. Across the creek is a cliff with a small, attractive waterfall. Due to the unusual humidity in this area, three rare tropical ferns, one of which is the Tunbridge Fern, grow here that are not found anywhere else in North America.

The elevation gain will be somewhere in the vicinity of ~1,160’.

A lush little pocket park worth knowing about. You'd think I'd figure it out by now, but I'm always surprised at how nice it is to get out with all of you. I had a great time.

challenging hike after having taken a month off to baby an injury, but well worth it! Gorgeous terrain, beautiful river sites and just about perfect weather - what more could you want? Worth repeating in warmer weather so we can take advantage of the swimming holes.

Enjoyed the hike and people. The Narrows and surrounding area is beautiful, can't believe I've never seen it mentioned in the waterfall books. It would be a good to do it again in warm weather and hang out for awhile at the swimming areas.

Apologies to Tracy for Bailey diving into Baxter's food like he'd never been fed and acting aggressively. I haven't seen him act like that before and will see if I can get the leader of the group obedience classes we're taking to help me make sure that is not repeated.

Hi, Just checked email. Landrum exit is #1 and is just inside SC on I26. Just one exit ramp and at the top take a left, then over the overpass and on your right is Ingles. First checking on the map from there to trialhead is about 60miles and will take about 1.5 hr travel. Should leave Ingles at 10. I have a gray 07 Ford Focus wagon with two antennas on the back. Ham radio plate of W9IXX.

    February 29, 2012

  • Kim

Phil, do you want to meet at the Ingles at 10 am and I'll follow you to the trailhead? Lin, do you want to meet there, too?

    February 28, 2012

  • Ken L.

@Phil & Kim - You all could meet up at the INGLES in Landrum near the state line off I-26, then that would be great. Lin, do you know how to get there at least ?
Plug in your address here to get to INGLES:
    http://g.co/maps/zrx2r

Then you guys should leave there around 10:00-10:15, should take around an hour to get to the trailhead.

I don't have a gpx location for that falls Ken. I'm sure Eric will share the info. It's not anyplace you'd ever expect as it's on private property.

    February 27, 2012

  • Linette

Hi! This will be my first hike with the group, so pardon my newbie question: I live near Spartanburg SC, is there another location I can meet you at?

    February 27, 2012

  • Ken L.

I want you to know that I downloaded your GPX file from your hike stats ;) But would like to know about that "other" waterfall. Looking at my waterfalls map right now.....

    February 27, 2012

  • Tom S.

I'm sure they'll be able to find the holes Eric. As far as I know though, you and I are the only ones who know the secret location with the sandy beach. You've been challenged Ken !!

    February 27, 2012

  • Ken L.

    @Eric :P to infinity and beyond !

    February 27, 2012

  • Eric

I'm not sharing where all the swimming holes are then! :p
