Moon Rise and Sunset Pot Luck on Black Balsam Knob

This is a short but steep and rocky hike of about 1/2 a mile to the open and grassy summit of Black Balsam Knob. The full moon will rise at about 6:50 PM and the Sun will set about 7:19PM. Black Balsam Knob, at 6214 feet, and with 360 degree veiws, is a great place to see both. Bring food to share and your favorite beverage. You will need a headlamp and or a good flashlight for the hike back down. If you don't have either please do not go. It is likely to get chilly or even cold, maybe windy as well, so please be ready for much cooler temps than Asheville. Did this meet up the last two Septembers and it was cooler than most people expected. It's good to hang around after the sun is fully set and enjoy the moon light above 6000 feet. Meet up at at Ingles near Bent Creek at 4:45 work out car pooling and leave by 5:00. Be sure to give your driver gas money. Friendly dogs welcome.

Do to an iffy weather forcast I have changed the RSVP dealine. The forcast has not changed from a 30% chance of rain and mostly cloudy, which is the same as the last full moon (see above photo 08/31/12).

Great hike and the weather cooperated. The full moon rose on schedule and was visible to all the folks scattered about on mountain tops, including the 4 of us.

It's pouring right now in Asheville, so I'm going to bow out. Hope to do it next time in nicer weather!

Could I please be put on waiting list? I don't see a place to rsvp, perhaps because it is full? Thank you for a reply

RSVP is at the top right of the screen. Let me know if you can't rsvp, not sure if I can add people to the waiting list or not you should be able to.

Why is there a waiting list?? Is it necessary to cap this type of event?? Seems like the more the merrier????

    September 21, 2012

    • Fred I.

In the last two years that I hosted this there were about 25 people. That was all I expected. Within two hours of posted there were 35, so I capped it at 40. More can be merrier to a point, and at some point it is not. Have been working 7 days a week long hours, sorry I did not relpy sooner.
