Hike the Plutons 9.5 Miles

  • December 9, 2012 · 10:00 AM

Plutons are the metamorphic rock domes created from molten lava and then uncovered by erosion, such as Looking Glass, John and Cedar Rocks.

We will meet at the Brevard Rd Ingles parking lot next to the Ingles sign.  Look for a black 1993 Honda Accord.  If you live south of Asheville, you can meet us at the Davidson River fish hatchery parking lot, we should be at the hatchery between 10:45 and 11:00.  We should be back at Ingles by 6:00.

We will walk at a moderate pace, faster than Easy Hikers, slower than CMC.  We will stop for a short lunch break as well as anything of interest.

From Davidson River fish hatchery trail head, 1.3mi E on Cat Gap Loop trail, 1.8mi on John Rock trail up and over open ledges of John Rock, 0.2 S on Cat Gap Loop trail, 2.4mi W on Art Loeb trail passing base of rock face on S side of Cedar Rock Mtn., 2.7mi N on Butter Gap trail, 1.1mi E on Cat Gap Loop trail returning to trailhead.

All of these trails or trail sections are rated as "moderate";  which means that a trail has a grade mostly less than 20% ( one foot of climb for each five feet of travel ), the footpath can be rocky and the trail may cross streams without footbridges.

NC hunting regulations prohibit hunting on public lands on Sundays.

I have a vehicle, but get about 12 mpg, so if anyone is heading over to Ingles from the Weaverville/Woodfin/N Asheville direction, I would love to carpool. Will contribute for gas... I live in Woodfin back behind Beaver Lake. Please let me know soon!! If you send me a callback number, I can call you from my gmail call phone-my email is [masked] :O) Thanks, looking forward to it! Fred PS Can drive over if necessary, but it never hurts to ask...

Maybe Dave and/or Alison wants to lead the wait list in hiking this route in reverse and we can all meet for lunch in the middle?

I hiked this route in a reverse direction last Sunday with another group; the views from rock tops are absolutely amazing. For the Cedar Rock section, you may consider to add in the "open ledges of Cedar Rock: although the climb is strenuous, it's a short section, and the view is just amazing (DON'T open the following link if you don't want to spoil your surprise view on Sunday):

Wish you all a great time!

I would love this hike! Unfortunately, I work every Sunday. Is there a Saturday anyone would like to hike this instead?
