Art Loeb trail section hike series

This series of hikes completes the Art Loeb trail in sections, and is a prelude to a planned spring backpacking through-hike of the entire 30.1 mile Art Loeb trail.

This hike is the section from Gloucester Gap to Davidson River Campground. 12.5 miles. Many climbs and descents. Rated as difficult.

Weather policy: Cancelled only if weather makes hiking or driving hazardous. Rain is not a reason to cancel unless heavy and/or temps are in the 30s.

Dogs: Maybe not the best hike for dogs.

Meetup at Ingles and form carpools. Leave Ingles for Davidson River trailhead at 9:10. If you live south of Asheville you can meet us at the Davidson River trailhead for the Art Loeb trail around 10:00, let us know when you rsvp. We will leave a car at Davidson River to shuttle drivers back to Gloucester Gap at the end of the hike. From Davidson River we'll continue up US-276 and Forest Service Rd 475 past the fish hatchery on gravel road to Gloucester Gap where we begin the hike on the Art Loeb trail back to the Davidson River trailhead. Depending on group pace we may finish the hike in the dark, bring headlamp or flashlight. If hiking starts by 10:30, we'll have about 7 hrs of daylight to complete the 12.5 miles, or an average of about 2 mph with short breaks. Bring lunch, water and clothing to suit the weather.

A little wet making it a bit more challenging, but overall a good day and great company! Thanks Bill!

Nice hike in the rain. The trail was very good even with these conditions

A very good if slightly damp hike with a great group of intrepid hikers. Thanks to Bil, Rose, Allen and David for the great company.

Sorry to wait to the last minute, but I’m not feeling well. See you next time.

I've been looking forward to this hike, but if it's raining in the a.m. or the chances are high during the day I'll probably bail. I don't enjoy hiking when it's raining.

Just wondering what the phrase "Maybe not the best hike for dogs" means? I was hoping to bring my dog on the hike.

Thanks Bill, it looks like the hike is all full with no waiting list. If that changes, I would like to go plus a friend. Thanks!

Hi Bill, I haven't hiked with your group yet and I have a question: can I hike part of the trail with you all?
