Smuggler's Cove Sea Caves / Palos Verdes

  • Nov 23, 2013 · 8:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

THIS EVENT IS BEING CROSS-POSTED WITH THE OCAP GROUP.

IT IS A JOINT EVENT BETWEEN OCAP AND THE ASIAN NIGHT OUT GROUP.

"ASIAN NIGHT OUT" IS HAPPY TO WORK WITH THE "Orange County Asian Professionals" IN JOINTLY ORGANIZING THIS HIKE....................

***********************************************

WELCOME TO THE SMUGGLER'S COVE SEA CAVES.

The intention of this hike is to create new friendship. As this is going to be one of the biggest hiking event of the year, let's make an effort to talk to people who we haven't talk to, share some stories with them, listen to their stories, and have fun with each other's company.

How many people are you intend to talk to?

CARPOOL: click here to coordinate carpools

Difficulty: Advanced beginners (700 ft gain loss elevation)

Length: 5 miles

Duration: 3 hours

This is the first time I'm doing this trail, so if there's any of you who have done this before, shout cos I'll be needing your help in leading the trail!

I heard that this trail is beautiful and there is a chance to see some water creatures.

NOTE: If the gate to the Forrestal Nature Preserve is closed then meeting is at the gate. If it is open, keep driving til the street ends and meet there.

Please EAT something before the hike.

WHAT TO BRING?

Obvious stuff: Water, Sunscreen, Snacks, insect repellent, Camera, Yourself, your stories, and your smile for the pictures.

I put a current RSVP limit to 20 people, which I think a manageable number of people for me. This is however is not set in stone, so do not worry if you go to the waiting list, you will still be bump to YES. No gender balance rule. Everyone is welcome. What I don't like are flakers and no show people. If you can't make it, please change your RSVP to NO, at least 24 hours prior. After this 24 hour, you have to give me a good reason for not be able to make it.

Before you click YES to RSVP, there is a question YOU need to answer. If you don't answer this, you will automatically be waitlisted or be sent to NO. This is just to make sure you read this (and the boring part).

Now for the boring part:

Disclaimer:
By RSVPing “Yes” to this event: You understand and agree that you are voluntarily participating in an "ASIAN NIGHT OUT Meetup" (hereinafter "ANOM") event at your own request and at your own risk.

You also give permission to ANOM to freely use of your name, picture and voice in any broadcast, telecast, print account, online or any other account in any medium of the event (the “Personal Release”). You understand that this Personal Release is perpetual in time and that it encompasses, without limitation, any copyright or right of publicity or privacy that you may have in your name, picture and voice.

PLEASE BE COURTEOUS TO OTHERS: There is a late cancellation policy after RSVPs close. If you cancel late more than 2 times, your membership will be reviewed and you can be subject to removal from the group. Reminder: 2 NO Shows means automatic removal from the group.

Questions? Either post in the comment section or email me.

THIS EVENT IS CROSS POSTED WITH OCAP. If you have RSVP'ed there, please do not RSVP here. Please do not double RSVP, this is to ensure I have the right head count.

Is there parking for all of us inside the reserve (ie, "where the road ends" if the gate is open) or should we park at the community center?

    1 · November 22, 2013

    • Allan P.

Caves are cool. I'll bring a headlight.?

The two we visited on a hike I went on a couple months ago had water flowing into them and were not accessible into them by foot as the waves were crashing into the side.

      1 · November 16, 2013

    • Richard C

Tide was out then so we got to see some amazing sea creatures in the tide pools. Definitely worth the hike down and back to see these creatures.

The other mention - there are some nature made dangers about the trail to be cautious of. On the way down, there is a dirt winding road with cactus. There was also some trail erosion the last time I was there, about 2-3 years ago. Not sure if they fixed it since, but there was this one scary spot eroded right before the cove. (looked like about a 50ft drop off a cliff).

    • Tom

Allan, not sure if I can make it yet. may be out of town. But otherwise, k.

      November 15, 2013

    • Richard C

Did this trail with another hiking group about a couple months ago. It was definitely down hill and easier the first half but should not be treacherous for some one whose sure footed. Just wear some shoes with good traction and you should be fine.

      1 · November 16, 2013

  • Allan P.

This is going to be the biggest hike of the year!!

    2 · November 14, 2013

  • Tom

Two things to note about this hike for those who haven't done it before: the first half (going down) is by far easier than going up (the second half).
