Re: [aspergers-81] Connecticut Shooting

I am a Mother of a 14 year old Adpergers child and have not engaged in this group before now. It is heartbreaking, this terrible tragedy and I also felt that the highlighting of him being "slightly autistic" needs to be addressed. Joshua may have many social challenges, he is by all means never violent or hateful .. As a matter of fact I find Aspergers folks on general passive and kind. I hope someone steps up in the media with the facts AND when the tox report on the shooter comes back, I have no doubt it will be more complicated then just "slightly autistic". I have no doubt there will be other disorders in play AND probably pharmaceuticals as well. Very sad day

I agree Gabriel.  I sent an email to one of the people from the Autism Society to see if they have anyone who could speak knowledgeably about Aspergers/HFA who would be willing to contact the Charlotte Observer.  I will let you know if I hear anything.  It would be better coming from someone who has facts and figures and a professional background I think.  The media seem to want to make Aspergers the new scapegoat in these situations.  My prayers go out to everyone involved in this situation.

Some news outlets have reported that Adam Lanza may have had Autism or Asperger Syndrome, and they reported it as if it made him more likely to commit violent crime. If anyone the meetup group has the resources to reach out to some news organizations to help dispel the myths, I think that would help us to not be marginalized in society. Even with the progress that has been made toward increasing awareness, reporting like what I have seen about the shooting has the potential to set our cause back a long way.
