Astoria Sunday Meetup @ Uncle George's

Come join your fellow writers at Uncle George's Tavern!

We will be sitting in a nook towards the back, just ask the host for the "writer's group" or "Alex's table".

If you would like to have your work critiqued, please write "SUNDAY," followed by your name and the title of your work in the uploads. Each person at the meeting should read the Sunday works before the meeting, and should bring them in on paper or in digital form so that we can all edit the works together.

The group's agenda will be as follows:

3-3:15 - chill, chat, order food.

3:15- 5:15 - critique works

5:15 - 5:30 - chill, chat, pay the bill

When critiquing a fellow writer's work, please begin by telling the writer what WORKED for you in the piece, what you liked, what you enjoyed and why. It is as important for writers to know what they're doing right as what they're doing wrong. After you share what you enjoyed, offer suggestions for what can be improved! Each person will have a max of 5 minutes to offer feedback. The writer will listen without responding, and will then have 5 minutes for a response to the group.

Finally, let's make sure to all order some food so that we can be good guests of Uncle George, stay on his good side, and have him continue providing us space in the nook where we do our thang.

See you there,

Alex

Hope you had a great meeting today. I was with my nephew in the city and could not make it on time :(

Glad you're okay -- was concerned that you had met with misfortune. Speaking of meetings, I met your friend and compatriot Luan yesterday, and he says you have a blog. Address, please?

Wow, thank you for the birthday wishes everyone! 34 years on this planet, and this is probably one of the best birthdays I've had!

So I just want to let everyone know that I tried to reserve our nook at Uncle George's but was told that due to a Greek holiday it would not be available; also it may be quite crowded - but we still should be able to get a table. I will arrive a bit early and do what I can to grab one. Just thought I'd let you know, we'll all have to talk a little louder than usual. See you all tomorrow!

We show Uncle George who's running the show and odds are next week we get the whole restaurant to ourselves.

Happy Birthday! You born and able to see the Space Station for two minutes at 5am. How special are you?

Does that mean I can't request being the "Duchess of Kool?" Damn, I'll have to cancel my coat of arms design session. I knew finding a unicorn and a pegasus was more luck than I usually have!

    April 5, 2013

    • Alexei S.

No, definitely not. But let me just make sure you're serious Milagros - should we set that as your official title? :D

      April 5, 2013

    • Milagros

Without Royal or Majesty in our group's name what would be the point? And I've already canceled the coat of arms thing.

Hey guys, Okay - maybe I was a bit rash with the name change. ;) It's awesome that our group has grown so quickly and that we are passionate about what we're gonna' be called. I must admit, I sometimes like things to move too fast, and I think I should have waited until we came to a consensus on a name - my apologies, I hope there's no hard feelings. That said, let's return the name to Astoria Writers Group for now, and see what ideas we can come up with as a group? This group is about having fun together while working on something we love. And really, what's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, right? Hope you guys have an awesome meeting on Sunday. A

Just an update. The pieces we are reviewing on Sunday are 1) Untitled Christina Lescay Megret 2) PieChartJohn_Three and 3) velveteen werewolves chapter 3. Since Katya will unfortunately be unable to attend, we will be saving her piece Stolen Hearts until the next meeting (April 14th)!

Upon further reflection, I'd prefer "The Royal Astorian Writer's Society" to "Her Majesty's Astorian Writer's Society." The "Her Majesty's" is not sitting quite right with me. I'd even suggest "The Astorian Writer's Society" - in fact, when I see that typed it just feels right and I much prefer it. But no matter what our name eventually becomes, we get to keep the nicknames, right?

    Feedback on new name? ;)

Don't worry, Dan. You are of the majority opinion. The core question that remains is whether this gathering is truly governed by a democratic process, or whether its nominal leader merely nods politely at our suggestions and then does what he pleases. His recent moves fuel the speculation that he is of Romanov blood. And well, we know what happened to those folks. ;-)

Is it too late to upload a story to be shared on Sunday? I have a short one pager that I want critiqued! :)

    April 5, 2013

    • Todd J.

Go right ahead and upload it, Christina! We look forward to reading it!

Hello to citizens of Kingdom )
I will have 3 exams next week and no time to prepare. I guess I will miss next meeting. SO you can skip my fairy tale and have someone else`s story. I will join you again after exam. )

Well, my first order of business as El Arlequin Azul is to inform the rest of the Society's subjects: This Sunday we will be reviewing three pieces. "Stolen Hearts," a Katya-penned tale full of twists, quests, black queens and blacker kings - even a mid-air fight between two birds! What's not to love? The third chapter of "Velveteen Werewolves." If you're Team Jacob, this one is for you. If you know what Team Jacob is, you don't live under a rock and have watched at least as many horrendous movies as I have. The hits just keep on coming with the third piece, "The Ballad of PieChart John" Chapter Two, in which Steve keeps us hungry for pastries while quizzing the cosmos with a graphically-obsessed protagonist on a collision course with a different dimension.

I'm very excited about this weeks gathering, and am looking forward to meeting some new members. If you've found yourself on the waiting list, do not worry - consider yourself attending! See you all Sunday!

I just want to go over what is actually now Chapter Three of JOHN once more before submitting, Todd. What was Chapter One has now been split into Chapters One and Two. I will submit either tonight or tomorrow.
