Hi sunday people. i just posted this on monday's but i thought i'd mention it to you too. who knows...

something i've been meaning to mention for quite a while is some information i know about copyrights. it is a good idea when posting anywhere online to include a copyright. "copyright © 2013 by your name or pen name", in that order. once posted, it is considered to be published. so, if published, it is considered to be yours and have your copyright, and it should have that copyright indicated. this i learned from the us copyright office. technically you should send it in and pay what they charge, but i guess, if the work is not yet completed that would not necessarily make any sense. one site i've been to and posted on, automatically indicates a copyright with your user name when the work is posted. ... just some information i wanted to pass along.

It never hurts to add the notice of copyright. But I wouldn't panic re: works posted on the AWG site. I don't know exactly who asked or answered what in the conversation with the copyright office but in all things legal, precision, not just in answers but questions too is important. The sort of publication that could defeat a copyright absent notice is a general publication, one to a substantial number of persons outside one's normal circle of family or acquaintances. "Limited publication" to select groups for particular purposes do not defeat a copyright even if notice is absent. Posting one's writing on a general web site, especially one geared toward dissemination of writings to a broad public audience, would, indeed, be the kind of publication that would require notice. Posting to a specialized group web site such as AWG for peer critique is not such a publication -- especially when the author limits visibility to members of the group.

Marc, (and Steve too) I agree, and I don't. but it is a matter of if you copyright or don't and what does or doesn't afterward. If you copyright a work, wherever you post it and someone steals it you still have to go through the process of proving it is your copyright. on the other hand if you didn't cr then you'd still have to prove something. The other guy would be in the same boat as well either way. For myself, i just like to see it. it could shave of a few percentages, if you know what I mean. but like Marc says, I (or you) wouldn't (or shouldn't) panic. Just write things and let others know that you are doing it and keep evidence.

Hi Steve. Unfortunately I went into Athens and no one seemed to be able to point me to the "writers" and since their wifi is super slow I didn't get ur updated message on the location until after I ordered. But no worries I am writing in solidarity from across the street. See you at the next meetup !

Hi Diana. Sorry for the confusion. We're at Burger Club, and we'll be writing after dinner as it's bound to get loud in here. We invite you to stop in and say hi. There's six of us at the table in the middle. If not, no worries -- we look forward to meeting you next week at Mike's Diner. :-)

    RED ALERT / RED ALERT

Athens Cafe is packed and has a very LOUD samba band playing. Fortunately, BURGER CLUB, directly across the street, has room and is quiet. I will stand in front if Athens Cafe until 5:15 to hopefully catch and redirect folks. I'm wearing an orange fleece fear, for those new to the group.

We'll be reading submissions from Marc Gerstein and Jennifer on Sunday before the one-hour write. Both pieces are now available from the "Files" section on this site.
