Astoria Monday Meetup @ Igloo

Come join your fellow writers at Igloo!

We will be sitting at some tables inside, and we should be super easy to find.

If you would like to have your work critiqued for the Monday session, please write "MONDAY," followed by your name and the title of your work in the uploads. Each person at the meeting should read the Monday works before the meeting, and should bring them in on paper or in digital form so that we can all edit the works together.

The group's agenda will be as follows:

7-7:15 - chill, chat, order food.

7:15- 9:00 - critique works

9:00 - 9:15 - chill, chat, pay the bill

When critiquing a fellow writer's work, please begin by telling the writer what WORKED for you in the piece, what you liked, what you enjoyed and why. It is as important for writers to know what they're doing right as what they're doing wrong. After you share what you enjoyed, offer suggestions for what can be improved! Each person will have a max of 5 minutes to offer feedback. The writer will listen without responding, and will then have 5 minutes for a response to the group.

See you there,

Dan

hi. something i've been meaning to mention for quite a while is some information i know about copyrights. it is a good idea when posting anywhere online to include a copyright. "copyright © 2013 by your name or pen name", in that order. once posted, it is considered to be published. so, if published, it is considered to be yours and have your copyright, and it should have that copyright indicated. this i learned from the us copyright office. technically you should send it in and pay what they charge, but i guess, if the work is not yet completed that would not necessarily make any sense. one site i've been to and posted on, automatically indicates a copyright with your user name when the work is posted. ... just some information i wanted to pass along.

Why don't we try to set it up for our group, though I attended a Gotham workshop and the President said people rarely steal.

yes, i agree, but when it comes to publishing, you do have a copyright and having one on anything you write just seems the right thing to do. maybe not even for the "protection" it could have but maybe it makes you real, or official.

    Hello everyone,
Sorry about missing tonight's meeting and any inconvenience our absence may cause. I've been feeling ill since Thursday and feared I might not make it tonight. On a positive note, I was able to finish my story (a story, not a page)!
I will post it before the next meeting and look forward to getting your feedback on it if I am able to make it next Monday.

    Hi everyone,

I'm planning to attend my first session tonight. I only see one piece to read tonight though - swordstory. Is that all there is for tonight or am I missing something? And going forward, when is the latest we can post for a Monday night reading? Thanks! Looking forward to meeting everyone!

      Hi Jessica,
I am taking the liberty to Answer as a relatively frequent participant. I think only one piece was posted, and the author won't make it tonight. We aim to submit everything by Friday noon. Usually members must have participated at least once before they are asked or can submit. Come tonight and we'll discuss the rest. I look forward to meeting you.

Myself and Natasha will probably not make it tonight due to a medical issue. In the ER now, nothing too serious! But probably will not get there tonight. Sorry guys.

    October 21, 2013

    • Blerta

Good to know it is not too serious but take care of yourselves first. See you the following time.
