The Brooklyn Astronomy Meetup Message Board › STAR PARTY: URBAN STARFEST - CENTRAL PARK, OCT 22,2011
I was hoping to surprise you all by scheduling one final star party this season at Prospect Park but it became apparent early on that the time slotted for today would be a washout weather wise. However I do have good news for you!!.
The Amateur Astronomer's Association of NYC (a group to which I belong and have brought to your attention many times) is holding it's Annual Urban Starfest in Sheep Meadow, Central Park, Saturday, October 22 2011. (Rain date: Sat, Oct 23rd). (NOTE: THIS EVENT IS AT CENTRAL PARK, MANHATTAN; NOT PROSPECT PARK WHERE WE USUALLY MEET.).
Below is the information on the event taken from it's website. Note that nearby parking can be arranged for those bringing scopes. This is a big event with telescopes of all kinds and sizes, as well as the largest collection of the most knowledgeable and accessible amateur astrononomers you will find in one place in the NYC area. So I encourage all of you to come out and enjoy. If you are even the least bit interested in observational astronomy this is not an event you want to miss. Hope to see you there. As always you can call me at 718-499-4567 if you have any questions.
The Amateur Astronomers Association, in conjunction with the Urban Park Rangers, presents its annual Urban Starfest each year in the Sheep Meadow of Central Park on a Saturday evening in the fall. There is a rain/cloud date the following evening.
The Urban Starfest is free and open to everyone. It demonstrates the ability and perseverance of amateur astronomers and the general public to view the wonders of the night sky even though we will only be a mile from Times Square! The Sheep Meadow is an open area of Central Park free of glare from local lighting and where almost the entire sky can be seen. Many club members and other amateur astronomers bring large telescopes so that they and the public can share in the heavenly views.
THIS YEAR'S STARFEST (2011) WILL BE HELD FROM DUSK TO 10 PM ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22
CLOUD/RAIN DATE IS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23
Keith Rowan has written an excellent history of Starfest on his website athttp://rigel.csi.cuny.edu/rowan/NYC_Urban_Starfest.html
NOTE: Free parking nearby will be available for those bringing telescopes to Starfest (send your name and license plate number to email@example.com).
Directions: Enter at Central Park West and 67th Street, walking past the parking lot for Tavern on the Green into the Sheep Meadow, a wide-open space where you should easily spot us.
