Perseid Meteor Shower at Aldergrove Regional Park

Metro Parks and RASC Vancouver are hosting an event to watch the 2013 Perseid meteor shower. The skies should be nice and dark with lots of meteors! The slim crescent Moon and Saturn will put on a nice show while we wait for it to get dark.

Meteor Shower Watch
Saturday, August 10, 8 pm~11 pm

Aldergrove Regional Park

The gates will be locked at 11 pm, however anyone who is already in the park is welcome to camp overnight until 10 am Sunday. Vehicles will be able to depart the park but not enter after 11 pm.

A dazzling display of shooting stars awaits you at the annual Perseid meteor shower. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will have telescopes available to help you view the stars and planets. Listen to stories and songs around the campfire and make a wish upon a star. Bring the whole family and camp overnight. Event will be cancelled if there is complete cloud cover. Phone to confirm. Campers must arrive between 5 and 8 pm. Event activities run from 8 to 11 pm. $2/person. Registration not required. Meet at the Aldergrove Bowl entrance on Lefeuvre Road, Abbotsford. am I reading a different chart than everybody else? This one says clear skies to midnight then getting slightly cloudy by sunrise. http://cleardarksky.com/c/AldrgLkPkbckey.html?1

Hey, that is the fun nature of weather in this part of the world. You are correct, it now looks clear until about 5 AM. It is a dynamic chart so I expect it will keep changing. But even more encouraging is that the transparency has significantly improved too. :-)

The CSClock is usually updated early morning so 10 - 12 hours is a long long time on the wet coast of Canada!

Would be 5 stars but someone forgot the cloud filters! What you say--they don't make cloud filters!! Well that explains it. Had a good time though!

The Abbotsford sky chart suddenly changed! It is clearer now, look outside. Maybe some luck!

I actually saw about 6 even with the horrible light pollution in my back yard. One of the meteors was perfect - I'll savour that moment. Hopefully I'll see some more tonight.

As disappointing as it was not to see a star in the sky it was wonderful to see such a good turn out and check out all the telescopes. Ted was most helpful in setting up the telescope we brought. Look forward to another event.

I am looking to watch it on Sunday night as its the real peak but we have no transport unfortunately. Let me know if anyone has a ride I could join and contribute for gas and anything else I would willing to! I think the perfect place would be the Mcdonalds Dark sky park in Abbortsford if anyone is interested in going. Or 2nd choice Porteau Cove. Text me at[masked] 5932. cheers.

Hey there Shawn, cool to know! I am down to shoot the milky way and more astrophotography with my DSLR and tripod. Let me know. I am down to share gas and all. It seems this weekend is all cloudy so its rather unfortunate and it rained earlier too. I went to do some astrophotography at Porteau Cove before and it was quite a satisfying experience. Looking forward to get to Mcdonalds Park as I heard it has the best dark skies in the Vancouver area.

I'm keen to try on Monday evening/night, if it's clear.

Does anyone have a central Vancouver spot that's good for the sky?
    - Richmond sea wall? (not open late enough?)
    - Cypress bowl parking lot (are the lights turned off?)
    - Whytecliffe Park (no view to the east?).
    - Garry Point Park in Steveston (getting a bit far for me)

    August 11, 2013

    • Shawn C.

In my experience with the Perseid meteor shower, the peak ramps up and dies very quickly.

I don't wish to discourage but, for me, Monday/Tuesday isn't worth a long drive on a work night.

      August 11, 2013

  • Shawn C.

    What about Sunday evening?

Please contact me if anyone wishes to get together on the real peak night of Sunday evening, August 11th? It isn't that dark but I am thinking of meeting up at Boundary Bay (where we met for PanSTARRS).

Shawn, NASA's Cooke "recommends looking on the nights of August 12th and 13th between the hours of 10:30 PM to 4:30 AM local time."Also, today looks a bit hazy/cloudy.

      August 11, 2013

    • Shawn C.

Tonight's (well after 1AM) is the peak time and it is not good for anyone in the lower mainland. :-) Can you believe it? The great weather couldn't hold out for just two more days?

      August 11, 2013

  • Terry M.

Large and enthusiastic crowd. If only the cloud gods had favoured us with a clear night!

    1 · August 11, 2013

    • Shawn C.

I couldn't help but feel quite frustrated that after an unprecedented season of dry and clear weather, the clouds HAD to roll in last night. Incidentally again tonight too - don't let the sunny weather fool you. :-(

Thank you.. I think I did see you there, but I didn't know it was you.. I was the person with the daughter and two dogs in tow.

Despite the fact it was cloudy there was no way to actually meet up with other people in the group - i didn't know who they were and they didn't know who I was :(

    August 11, 2013

    • Shawn C.

I agree with both Tracy and Bo. I have attended a number of events and found that, while everyone is approachable, there is not active effort to welcome new members. To be fair, it is usually quite dark and most members just want to do a little astronomy. It would be nice to hold a day time meet and greet.

      2 · August 11, 2013

They do have day meets. The HR Macmillan space center events are great to go and meet people in a non viewing atmosphere.

Another great educational outreach event. Thank you to all involved for your tremendously appreciated effort. How do I get involved?

    August 11, 2013

  • Bo B.

Even with the cloud cover I think this event rocked! I enjoyed talking to even more people than I did last year and I love the enthusiasm and advice willingly shared! I'll be making it to more RASC events for sure. (Big shoutout to my new buddy Terry!)

    3 · August 11, 2013

Didn't actually see any meteors. Might have had something to do with the stealthy cloud cover that slid in at the last minute.

    1 · August 11, 2013

Not lucky today ,it was Cloudy sky, so we left early, and they said it will start around 11pm till morning but because of cloud we can't see it in north east side of the sky.

      Hello Bo,
It is looking even more dismal now.

      August 10, 2013

    • Bo B.

Hmm. It actually looks better to me than it did before?? Have I got this right: between 9pm and 5am, there are dark blue squares underneath which seem to indicate only about 20% cloud coverage. Next under that, the teal/light blue colour of transparency indicates 'below average'. This, while not ideal, doesn't seem dismal? So confused now. But still going! :)

    I wish I may, I wish I might

    August 10, 2013

  • Shawn C.

My iPhone claims it is going to be cloudy tomorrow night and it isn't very encouraging that, the one I trust, Clear Sky Chart, is also predicting very poor transparency (means greater than 30% cloud cover), after midnight. http://cleardarksky.com/c/AldrgLkPkbckey.html?1 Please don't shoot the messenger... and weather is hard to predict.

Can we get a definitive statement as to there will be regular washrooms or simply port-a-potty...there will be a lot of folks sleeping over , or at least up really late, so waiting in a potty line won't be fun at 3AM

    August 7, 2013

    • Shawn C.

Every year, the city provides several port-a-potty units. I've attended 3 years in a row and I have never seen a line-up... so don't worry about that.

On a unrelated matter, Tim Hortons surprised us with free coffee and Timbits last year.

    August 8, 2013

  • Leigh C.

    Hi Neil,
To the best of my knowledge there will be 3 port a potties located where the park pit toilets are at the south end of the parking lot. There will also be 3 port a potties located in the camping area at the south end of the parking lot. I do not know if there is a drinking water supply at the park. I bring my own water and coffee etc.

Ugh... I don't like this location! Every year the dew is so heavy that by midnight, you are swimming in moisture. Forget about taking photos!

*BUT* it is an amazing Astronomy outreach program and I feel the sacrifice of missing Perseid meteors is worth it.

This year, the moon won't bother us! And considering the unusually dry summer, what are the chances that dew will not be a problem this year? [wishful thinking?]

Are RV trailers ok for overnight?

    July 23, 2013

    • Suzanna N.

Hi Allen, yes RV's are allowed. Tents have a designated area on the grass near the event and RV's can remain overnight in the parking lot.
