Spanish Banks Observing - Nova in Delphinus

You may have heard there's a nova happening now in Delphinus, which is almost directly overhead at night. Tonight looks like the clearest skies of the week. Let's get out to the Spanish Banks at 9pm and find the Nova in Delphinus! As usual, park in the far west parking lot of the Spanish Banks (see map) and we'll be a couple hundred feet away on the lawn near the seawall. There will be a special guest appearance from 9:07pm to 9:11 pm by the ISS.

All RASC events are free to attend and family friendly. Everyone is welcome, there is no membership required, and you don't even need a telescope, but bring one if you have one. Binoculars are an excellent tool for astronomy.

I estimate the magnitude of the Nova at about 7.7 tonight (Sept 7, 2013). It seems to be fading quite quickly.

Wispy clouds and the Moon were a problem. The nova was easily seen. My estimate of brightness: about 5.2, but keep the observing conditions. About 15 to 20 people - several with a newly developed interest in astronomy. A great group.

Ya, that was a seriously bright moon. Unfortunately the clouds are coming back for a few days so we had to go under a full moon. Thanks to David for coming with his charts, I never would have found the nova otherwise. Easily visible with binoculars.

What an excellent scope. Now I wish I waited for the AVX to come out!
