Observing at Spanish Banks

The sky has cleared for us and the moon doesn't rise until morning.  Let's get the scopes out to the Spanish Banks tonight.  Sunset is at 7:56pm and it should be dark enough to start observing around 8:30.  For most of us this is the last chance to calibrate our scopes before the Merritt Star Quest!

All RASC events are open to the public, family friendly, and free to attend.  You don't even need your own telescope, but bring one if you have one.  Binoculars are an excellent tool for astronomy!

Clear sky, but fairly humid. Seeing was fair. Milky way visible (just). Seeing was good for M13, Cat's Eye was a challenge, but visible. I think I could just make out M51. Thanks to the more experienced observers for their help. The 12" dob was great! Dew became a problem at around 11:15. I was the only one with a dew shield (Kendrick - bought used at Vancouver Telescope). The shield really helps: I think one is essential for Vancouver.

Two 6" SCTs, one 8" SCT and the 12" dob.

Yeah, I think it's time I put a dew shield on my scope. I'm getting about 45 minutes of observing time in the wet Vancouver air.

Any other night I would assume sarcasm... but I was there last time... never thought I'd see the day with 10 scopes and none of them Dobs.

I'm bringing my 12" doby if my neighbour gets home in time to help me load it in the car :-)
