RASC Vancouver Monthly Meeting

Destination hunting for the New Horizons Spacecraft: Where to go after Pluto?

Speaker: Dr. J.J. Kavelaars of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Victoria and member of the New Horizons science team.

Location: See map here.

The NASA-lead New Horizons Spacecraft is hurtling towards Pluto at +14 km/s.  In July 2015, the spacecraft will have a month-long encounter with the planet as it cruises into the outer solar system. Post Pluto, the spacecraft can be steered into a direction that is within 1/2 of a degree of its current trajectory. Where should we point it? I’ll describe the efforts of the international team of astronomers who are desperately hunting for New Horizons’ next destination.

Yes, that was one of the best talks I've seen in a long time! It's not often that you get such depth and entertainment in the same package ;).

Wow, that was one fantastic lecture! I love hearing the "how" behind NASA missions, and Dr. Kavelaars gave us exactly that.

That was a fantastic talk & presentation by Dr. Kavelaars. His sense of humour and enthusiasm were infectious - and a perfect complement to the technical nature of the presentation. Go, NEW HORIZONS !

Lot B. Then just walk up the stairs, cross the bus loop, and you're basically right there at the building
