Destination hunting for the New Horizons Spacecraft: Where to go after Pluto?
Speaker: Dr. J.J. Kavelaars of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Victoria and member of the New Horizons science team.
Location: See map here.
The NASA-lead New Horizons Spacecraft is hurtling towards Pluto at +14 km/s. In July 2015, the spacecraft will have a month-long encounter with the planet as it cruises into the outer solar system. Post Pluto, the spacecraft can be steered into a direction that is within 1/2 of a degree of its current trajectory. Where should we point it? I’ll describe the efforts of the international team of astronomers who are desperately hunting for New Horizons’ next destination.
