Perseid Meteor Shower at Aldergrove Regional Park

Metro Parks and RASC Vancouver are hosting an event to watch the 2014 Perseid meteor shower. The full moon will outshine the dimmer meteors, but Saturn and Mars will put on a nice show while we wait for it to get dark.

Meteor Shower Watch
Saturday, August 9, 8 pm~11 pm

Aldergrove Regional Park

The gates will be locked at 11 pm, however anyone who is already in the park is welcome to camp overnight until 10 am Sunday. Vehicles will be able to depart the park but not enter after 11 pm.

A dazzling display of shooting stars awaits you at the annual Perseid meteor shower. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will have telescopes available to help you view the stars and planets. Listen to stories and songs around the campfire and make a wish upon a star. Bring the whole family and camp overnight. Event will be rain or shine. Phone to confirm. Campers must arrive between 5 and 8 pm. Event activities run from 8 to 11 pm. $2/person. Registration not required. Meet at the Aldergrove Bowl entrance on Lefeuvre Road, Abbotsford. I enjoyed the event. Seeing the Int'al Space Station make a flyby was a bonus. I'll come back again w/o the moon to shoot star trails.

I'll be driving to the event from near the Renfrew skytrain station, leaving at around 6:30pm. I could give one person a ride. I do not plan to stay overnight; will probably leave the park between midnight and 1am.

I would love to view them under clearer skies, but it's a bit far for me to go. I'll have to wait & see what I can see under East Van skies ! Thanks for the invitation, though.

If there are going to be thousands, I'm concerned about how early to get there and not knowing the area, would like some information and tips on the parking situation. Thanks!

Hi Meg. I would not be concerned about "thousands". In 2012, Metro Parks counted approx 1,200 attendees (it was a clear night). In 2013, Metro Parks counted approx 700 attendees (cloudy night). There is sufficient parking on site for hundreds of vehicles and Metro Parks will have parking staff directing traffic. This is a family event so each vehicle will likely have multiple passengers/attendees. Not to worry - you won't be fighting for a parking spot with a thousand other cars. But this is a popular and well-attended annual event. The event starts at 8 pm so if you are concerned, I would get there for opening or shortly thereafter. Regards, Suzanna, Vice-President of RASC

Thanks for organizing, Gordon. Just wonder where can I find you guys inside the park? I expect to arrive between 9 and 9:30, by when you would have left "the Aldergrove Bowl entrance".

We'll be using the East entrance on Lefeuvre Road. Go in the gate and it will be obvious... hundreds (or thousands) of people and about 50 to 100 telescopes set up on the lawn.

      Great, thank you Scott.

If anyone is thinking of attending Table Mountain Star Party 2014, it is again at Eden Valley Ranch due to US Forest closing the old location, so it isn't as remote. I am planning on driving with a full size truck again, and have room for a passenger with cargo. They;'ll need to bring their own tent, bedding but I am willing to sharing cooking gear.

Its is just over the border from Osoyoos so you need a passport plus travel insurance.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
