The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada - Vancouver 2012 Annual General Meeting will be held in Room 2201 at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College.

Campus map:

Room 2201 is away fromthe River Side of the college, close to the Library and just past the Security/Information booth.  There will be signs.

The general public is welcome, but please be aware that the first part of the meeting is taken up with club business, such as electing the council for 2013. New members are even more welcome!

As a special treat: Following the conclusion of the business of the AGM, we will hear a short presentation by Ian McLennan, consultant to museums, science centres, and planetariums across the globe, and long-time member of Vancouver Centre. Ian's talk is entitled: "Sudden Darkness in the Morning - the recent total solar eclipse in Australia."

We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month, with astro-coffee, cookies, and juice served after the presentation.

Please join us for interesting and informative lectures on all aspects of astronomy and space-science, along with stimulating conversations!

Howard did an excellent job of moving an AGM along efficiently. Also a fun travellogue of travelling to Australia to view the eclipse.

I second Mark's comments plus I would like to add a thank you to Jennifer for being such a gracious hostess. Thank you also for the treats and coffee after the meeting.

Congrats to Howard and all the council for a great RASC Vancouver AGM last night. Looking forward to being part of more of the same exciting activities in 2013 for members and the public.

Douglas College has two outdoor decks fairly close to the meeting room that are okay when it comes to outdoor lighting. We are an urban college so it is not wonderful, but we bring our astronomy students out there on a regular basis. Good for naked eye viewing, Jupiter will be magnificent of course. You have to lift the telescopes up over a small doorway lip (about 15 centimetres) but there is elevator access to the fourth floor doorway.

Hi Jennifer, you are also in charge of clearing the sky.

Are your outdoor lights dark sky friendly?

Hello all, I am surprised to not see a single mention of one of the year's best and most consistent meteor showers, the Gemini meteor shower. FYI, it peaks tonight (Dec. 13 evening - 14 morning).

I am sure that this event will be fantastic but Douglas College is hardly a dark enough location for meteor viewing (although Geminids tend to produce a lot of bolids - aka Great Balls Of Fire!). If this isn't a rain-out night, I would like to suggest an observation party after this event. Is anyone interested. Can anyone suggest a good dark location? I've been in Vancouver for five years and still haven't found a dew-free (anything better than Aldergrove park), dark location. Dark skies all,
    Shawn
