Is Jesus Just a Made-Up Character?

Is That Guy in the White Robe and Halo Someone from Central Casting?

Did Jesus Christ ever exist? Pundits have answered Yes, No and Maybe. One book with a more or less definitive answer is“Atheism and the Case Against Christ,” by Matthew S. McCormick, and its fascinating premise will be discussed at our Friday evening Book & Film Club.

According to one book reviewer, “This author presents the best argument I’ve ever read critiquing the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus and other miracles...” (

We heartily recommend that you get this readable book (available, libraries, bookstores) for your library but Dr. Orenstein will explain its chapter premises before the discussion so you can discuss the ideas without reading the book.

We will be discussing Chapters 1,2,11 and 13 (see below). You do not have to have read the book to enjoy this discussion. For those who have the book, or will get it, here are the chapters to read for the discussion:

Chapter 1 - Speaking ill of Jesus

Chapter 2 - The History of the Jesus Story

Chapter 11 -The F-word (Faith)

Chapter 13 - Atheism and the Case Against Christ.

“We may not get through all of the chapters,” says Dr. Orenstein, “maybe a review of the first three--but it will be a fun and entertaining evening!”

So if you’re convinced that the whole story of Jesus’ martyrdom and subsequent resurrection is a lot of malarkey put together by fantasizing clerics or hunched-over mystics scribbling in monasteries, you will enjoy this discussion with fellow nonbelievers as we totally desecrate whatever is left of the Bible’s deceits.

David hosted an excellent meeting. Interesting ideas were exchanged and other conflicting opinions debated. Turnout was terrific considering the heatwave. I am looking forward to the next exciting event. Thank you David and Jane for making this an enjoyable occasion.

Thank you all for an enjoyable evening and for making the program so much fun to moderate. Everyone had such great comments and the insights, from the seasoned attendees to our newest members, it was just perfect. Everyone was respectful and in good cheer. Such a large group of freethinkers. Bravo!

The discussion was first rate! David Orenstein is the Number One discussion leader in town! It truly was not necessary to have read the book because David had all the salient points on screen. Bravo, Dave!

If you'e convinced that Jesus was a figment of someone's imagination that has transgressed into specious dogma, this discussion is for you!
