NYC ATHEISTS SEPTEMBER 19TH (FRIDAY) BOOK CLUB

  • September 19, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • Stone Creek

6:00 PM - HAPPY HOUR

6:30 PM - BOOK DISCUSSION

HOST: DAVID ORENSTEIN

WHAT:      NYC Atheists Book Club Discussion

BOOK: CARL SAGAN’S “SHADOWS OF
FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS.”
Sagan places humanity along side and not above nature
-- unlike religions, which claim humans are the center
of the universe and are the recipients of god’s special
creation. The book integrates the insights of science
into a vision of where we came from, who we are, and
what our fate might be. Very readable.

LOCATION:  STONE CREEK BAR & PUB 140 East 27th St. (3rd/Lex) - Back Room

COST:      FREE, but we ask you to purchase food/drink to compensate Stone Creek. Their knoshies & beer are better than in most bars.

Kevin: Absolutely anybody can come to this. There is no requirement that you be a member of NYC Atheists Inc. Just bring an inquiring mind...

You don't need to have read the book in order to come and take part in the discussion. David Orenstein gives a very detailed synopsis of the book ON SCREEN including its major premises. It's the premises we discuss. So get the book if you wish, it's an interesting read, but you aren't required to do this.

I'm a big Sagan fan. I remember him on his TV show saying the galaxy is Mmmbillions and Mmmmbillions of years old. He was the first guy ever to popularize astronomy and fact-based thinking. He gave Atheism a start because if you know the facts, you can't ever believe that there is an Old Guy in the sky
    watching everything you do.
