American Atheists’ Prez, Dave Silverman,

Will Speak at NYCA’s Annual Meeting

Silverman, Winner of NYCA’s ‘Atheist of the Year’ Award

to Tell Exciting Plans

Maybe 2012 should be dubbed the Year of the Atheist, with the big Reason Rally coming up in March in Washington DC and Atheism realizing its significant moment on America’s stage.  But short of that, New York City Atheists Inc. is happy to announce that its 2011 Atheist of the Year Award goes to Dave Silverman, president of American Atheists Inc. (AA) for his outstanding first year in office, his bold, exciting, fearless campaign to bring closet Atheists out into the open, his daring nationwide billboard project and his triumphant 2011 convention.

Silverman will accept his award at the NYCA Annual Meeting on January 26.  He will also tell us about the upcoming Reason Rally in Washington, which he notes “will be the largest Atheist event in world history.”  Silverman will explain why Atheist groups decided to have the rally, its purpose and what we hope to gain from a movement perspective.

Dawkins to Be a Headliner

Silverman notes that directly following the Reason Rally in March, American Atheists Inc. will hold its annual convention in Washington DC, and, he says, “We intend it to be the largest and greatest AA convention ever, with Richard Dawkins, PZ Myers and Taslima Nasrin as headliners.”

The theme of the 2012 AA convention in Washington will be--and it is the theme closest to Silverman’s heart--coming out of the Atheist closet. “We will give people tools on how to come out of the closet, to help them with their everyday lives.”  And, confides the young president, “We will be featuring a closeted Atheist preacher who will come on stage in disguise and talk about what it’s like to live a lie.”

NYCA’s president Kenneth Bronstein will give a review of our accomplishments during 2011 and present our projected goals for 2012. We welcome your ideas and suggestions for new events or new programs; we work together for a better NYCA each year.
