TV Personality Tyson’s Book Explored
Anticipating His Upcoming TV Series, ‘Cosmos - A Personal Voyage’
The Book Club will discuss Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson’s popular book, “Origins: 14 Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution” (2004) (co-authored with Donald Goldsmith), led by our popular discussion leader, the personable Dr. David Orenstein, a paleontologist and educator from New Jersey.
We will focus on the Preface (“Origins of Science,”) and on Part 5, “Origins of Life”--so if you only have time to read a bit of the book, read those two chapters.
Available in Paperback & Library
The book is now available in paperback (WW Norton is the paperback publisher) in any bookstore. It is also available on Amazon.com. And of course, you can always get it for free at the library. We recommend buying it; it will be a welcome edition to your permanent library.
Dr. Tyson, a well-known astrophysicist, is currently the director of the Hayden Planetarium and a research associate in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. Since 2006 he has hosted the science television show, NOVA Science NOW on PBS.
It was announced last year that Tyson will soon be hosting a new sequel to Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage” television series.
From the Bronx to Harvard
Dr. Tyson grew up in the Bronx, the son of two scientists. He attended the Bronx High School of Science, graduated from Harvard, got his M.A. degree in astronomy from the University of Texas and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in astrophysics.
His four-part “Origins” miniseries of PBS’s Nova inspired the companion volume for this series, “Origins: 14 Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution.” He is also a regular on The History Channel’s popular series “The Universe.”
Come for the Fun
Come, enjoy joining in the talk about the ideas of this wonderful African American scientist and TV personality in the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of a pub with fellow Atheists and nonbelievers. This is a social event as well as an educational event and our goal is both to learn and have fun.
Feel free to come even though you haven’t read the book. The ideas discussed are universal. Who knows, if you haven’t read the book, talking about Tyson’s ideas may very well inspire you to read it.
