Las Vegas PRIDE Festival

http://lasvegaspride.org/events_festival.html

We know that many religious organizations lag behind others in their acceptance of diversity. We also know that many members of our LGBTQ community have experienced guilt, shame and fear when dealing with intolerant archaic religious principles.
By participating in this event, the main goal for Halvason and the Las Vegas Coalition of Reason is simply to celebrate diversity and proudly support our local LGBT community. We will rent a tent/table to provide hand-outs and information from several local and national secular organizations including:

http://www.halvason.org/ (Humanist Association of Las Vegas and Southern Nevada)
http://lgbthumanists.org/ (LGBTQ Humanist Council)
http://www.meetup.com/atheists-30/ (Las Vegas Atheist Meetup)
http://www.americanhumanist.org/ (American Humanist Association)
http://www.uuclv.org/ (Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas)
https://www.facebook.com/ssaunlv (Secular Student Alliance at UNLV)
https://www.facebook.com/SLSBoydLaw (Secular Legal Society at UNLV Boyd Law)
https://www.facebook.com/groups/112839638749417/ (Las Vegas Atheists)
http://unitedchurchofbacon.com/ (United Church of Bacon)
http://unitedcor.org/las-vegas/page/home (United Coalition of Reason)
http://www.atheists.org/ (American Atheists)

We will be organizing some fun contests and offering prizes (T-shirts and whatnots) both for participants and volunteers (more details to come).

In short: We want our LGBTQ brothers and sisters to know that the secular members of their community will proudly stand with them to confront discrimination, prejudice and ignorance.
We also want them to know that there are many valid alternatives to religion.

Thank you so much to all the volunteers for all your help! I think this was a great success. I will be proud to bring this up at the next Interfaith Council meeting where I will have a chance to ask the Catholics, the Mormons and the Jews... where were you?

BTW - here is something I have submitted as a Letter to the Editor to several local publications explaining our involvement in this event (and throwing religion under the bus in the process). Feel free to copy and distribute some or all of the following:

"On Saturday, September 7th, The Las Vegas Coalition of Reason (LasVegasCoR.org) will celebrate diversity and proudly support our local LGBTQ community by participating in the PRIDE Festival at the Clark County Amphitheater."

"We know that many churches and religious organizations still refuse to embrace diversity. We also know that many members of our LGBTQ community have experienced guilt, shame and fear when confronted with intolerant religious principles. As humanists, atheists, skeptics, freethinkers and agnostics we can empathize with these emotions because we’ve had to deal with religious prejudice before. By participating in the PRIDE Festival, we want our LGBTQ brothers and sisters to know that the secular members of their community will proudly stand with them to send a loud message against religious discrimination, prejudice and hate. We also want everyone to know that if you want to lead a good, happy, ethical life of value, you don’t need religion to do it. Humanists, for example, like the idea of basing our moral values in science and reason. This is why a humanist would never oppose an idea like same-sex marriage because, unlike many religions, we would never stand in the way of love."

So, this is why I encourage everyone to come OUT and support DIVERSITY. This may be our last chance to do so before the Catholic Church starts allowing same-sex marriage and the Pope starts claiming that they were the first ones to come up with the idea.

    September 1, 2013

  • Raul M.

This is important for us because unlike other events where we’ve had tables (TAM, SSA Conference at UNLV, etc), this event is not directly related to religion, secularity or skepticism and the people that are coming to this event are not necessarily “our peeps”. Of course there are many members of the LGBT community that are atheists, but there are also many that are not. This is why I plan to be on my best behavior; instead of debating I will try to win everyone over with kindness and by focusing on the things that we DO have in common: • An appreciation for the value of DIVERSITY
    • The difficult but important task of coming OUT
    • PRIDE for what we are and what we believe

    September 1, 2013

  • Raul M.

    • When you get there, look for the table with the large banner that reads: “Don’t believe in God? Join the Club!”
    • Come say hello. When you see us, raise your hands to make an “A” for atheist or an “H” for humanist so we know you’re one of us.
    • Please forward this invitation to anyone that may be interested (and even those that may not).
    • If you’re not coming… please reconsider.

Also, we're looking for slogans for our t-shirts/banner. Please send us your suggestions.
Short and funny work best. Think that this is done for mass appeal so we may want to tone it down a bit and stay away from the extremely vicious or confrontational. Instead of attacking religion (negative) it would be better to applaud secularism and morality (positive).
Take a look at the UnitedCoR page for ideas: http://unitedcor.org/national/page/home
