Monthly Round Table and New Member Welcome

(Formerly known as "Atheists Anonymous"...) On the second Saturday of each month, we gather and engage in full group discussion in the comfort of a private room. This is a little different than our other monthly events in that it is a structured meeting with some ground rules for group discussion. The motivation is to connect with more of each other, which is difficult to accomplish if we're fractured into several small conversations.

New members: You'll hear a brief overview of the meetup and then have an opportunity to introduce yourself and get to know other active members, so please join us and share your thoughts and experiences. Shy members: Just come and spectate. You don't have to speak if you're not comfortable.

Meeting outline:

WELCOME BRIEFING
Meeting purpose, agenda and ground rules. LV Atheists Meetup overview for newcomers.

INTROS/OPENING RANTS
Share with us a little bit about yourself and what brings you to the group. Or sound off-- what do you have to say to an audience of atheists?

DISCUSSION TOPIC OF THE MONTH
How was the Grand Spring Celebration at Springs Preserve? (http://www.meetup.com/atheists-30/events/173473232/) What ideas do you have for an effective, community-building event for atheists? Or does this all rub you wrong because it smells too much like "atheist church"?

CLOSE
Final thoughts, meetup announcements/reminders, send-off.

At the conclusion of the meeting, members are encouraged to migrate to the pub area for continued discussions and drinks.

I started a discussion in the discussion forum on a proposed name for a non-religious community here in Las Vegas for anyone who wants to comment or suggest a name. Also, another discussion by Jay who was at the meeting, brings up some different ideas that would affect any name proposed.

A question at the meetup! What should we call the HALV gatherings: Atheist church? Sunday assembly?
    Discussion got heated.

I was reminded of FOX NEWS' outrage during the war on christmas several years ago. They were fuming over Jerry Stiller's proposal:

Jerry Stiller (on Seinfeld?) talked about "Festivus" - in December, there's christmas, kwanza, hannukah, etc. And then there's "Festivus" for the rest of us. Maybe that's a name for our Sunday gathering: we have a Springs Preserve "Festivus" monthly. A light hearted alternative??

Lost in the mix: The topic wasn't about the name of the event at all. I supplemented a question about whether this event having the feel of "atheist church" is a turn off for atheists. Unfortunately, I underestimated how much of a lightning rod the term "atheist church" is for atheists and should have attempted a different phrasing.

You can tell we are like family when we bicker and fight then forget about it right away. . .BTW Alex says they have a pool. So when is the party? His wife makes delicious Dolma I must say.

Tonight on CNN at 7 PM and again at 10 PM is a show called Morgan 'Spurlock:inside man'. He is going to attend a church service and also an atheist assembly. We might want to watch it in order to get some ideas about the atheist church/assembly/meeting that we've were talking about yesterday.

You know it was a good meeting when it ends with a food fight. :)

Perhaps those of us on the waiting list should plan to go anyways... since we can always have a "Waiting Atheists" meeting in another part of the restaurant. I'm on the wait list so I'll probably find a seat in the bar for me and my macbook, then see how things go.

Thanks for taking the lead on this, Ty. Ideally, everyone should show up before 3 so we can get settled and figure out how to handle overflow if we exceed the capacity.

I always thought an overflow was good thing in a way

The bar has plenty of room -- even standing-room only in the meeting room if necessary. And if not, overflow into the regular bar. It's huge.

I have attended several meetings and always find them interesting. I am on waiting list and hope there is room for me to attend. I await your notice.

Would it be ok to bring my 10 yr old, if its appropriate?

    April 27, 2014

    • Brian N.

I'll do what I can to make it safe and comfortable for your child, but this would be an "at your own risk" deal because debates may get heated, particularly with alcohol in the mix. Given that this month's topic is about community building, I'd love to hear input from a young mind if they're willing to share.

I am not able to go :-( but I hope to finally attend an event soon. I'm the only atheist I know!
