Atheists United - San Fernando Valley Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

  • May 16, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

What will be the next annoying religion to be created in the near future?

Our normal meeting format is to meet and order something to eat at / around 6:30pm while socializing. At around 7:30pm, the group moderator calls for discussion topics to be discussed at next month's meeting, and the group votes on the top 3 topics from those suggested. Once next month's topic has been decided, the moderator then introduces the discussion topic that was chosen at the last meeting and goes around the room to invite attendees to speak their perspective to the topic.

It's a little structured, but we find it's a great format to get people engaged and included in the conversation and usually leads to subgroups breaking off and chatting in side booths until the meeting is over or the restaurant closes, whichever comes first.

The most challenging part is continually finding good topical questions to discuss. The topics are connected to freethought, religion, or church-state separation. We encourage you to take note of topics throughout your week and suggest them at our meeting!

Following is a link to research which found that religious people distrust atheists as much as rapists. Research explores anti-atheist prejudice and finds people of faith distrust atheists more than gay men, feminists, Muslims, and others. In the article there is a link to the research paper, which states that part of the reason for the distrust is the belief that people behave better if they think that a god is watching them.

Here is a link to the gallop poll that found that Americans would sooner vote for a Muslim, gay, or lesbian for President than for an atheist. The good news is that the number has been rising and now a majority would vote for an atheist president.
