Atheists United - San Fernando Valley Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

  • Dec 20, 2012 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

TOPIC FOR THIS MEETING:

How do we diminish the
influence of religion in American society?

Our normal meeting format is to meet and order something to eat at 6:30, while socializing. At 7:30 the group moderator will call the meeting to order. At this time we like to welcome new faces to our group, and we all introduce ourselves.

Any new business (recent events in the news that pertain to Atheism, interesting articles written, upcoming events, etc.) is shared, and then we begin our group discussion on the topic chosen at the meeting the month before.

It's a fairly structured discussion format, with members raising their hands and being called on to offer their thoughts and responses to others, in the order in which they raised their hands. The moderator keeps a running list of names through the meeting, and it keeps things moving and orderly.

Around 8:45 we wrap up the discussion and request suggestions for topics for the next month's meeting. We all vote on those presented, and the topic chosen is then posted on this site, above.

It's a little structured, but we find it's a great format to get people engaged and included in the conversation and usually leads to subgroups breaking off and chatting in side booths until the meeting is over or the restaurant closes, whichever comes first.

The most challenging part is continually finding good topical questions to discuss. The topics are connected to freethought, religion, church-state separation and philosophical issues. We encourage you to take note of topic ideas you might have throughout your month and suggest them at our meeting!

Sorry I couldn't attend, I want to meet more like-minded freethinkers... but work related stuff wouldn't let me go, I hope i can make it to the next meeting.

Fairly new to opening up about my secularism and looking forward to meeting people I can talk about it freely with.
