Atheists United - San Fernando Valley June Meeting

  • Jun 26, 2008 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Our June meeting will diverge from our usual format (and date) to accommodate a very special guest from India, Dr. Goparaju Vijayam, who serves as the Executive Director of the Atheist Centre of India. Dr. Vijayam will be arriving in California after speaking at the 2008 International Humanist and Ethical Union Conference in Washington DC to visit local atheist groups and talk about the importance of atheism in today's modern world. This is a very rare treat! Come and find out about how atheism is faring in the East and what problems they are facing there.

The place was packed, and the attendees were quite interested to hear from Dr. Vijayam and the Atheist Centre of India.

Wow! The room was packed with all sorts of new people, and they had tons of questions for Dr. Vijayam to answer!
I think this was our most successful meetup to-date!

It was informative to hear about the challenges that Atheism faces in another country. I liked Dr. Vijayam's analogy of Atheists being like passengers on a train -- something like: the train has its goal, with us each getting on and off the train with our varied lives.

VERY enlightening speaker who presented a very different and socially committed approach to atheism and positive humanistic atheism. I think the Atheist Centre is a good example of the approach that atheist organizations in the USA should take. Thank you, Gary the Grouch
