Opposition to female circumcision is growing in Africa
An estimated 8,000 communities across Africa have banned or publicly declared opposition to female circumcision, according to the United Nations, whose agencies spent more than $6.1 million in 2011 to combat the practice, which involves cutting away all or part of female genitalia. A map shows the frequency of the procedure across Africa.
