Re: [atheists-8] Passive Activism: The National Pocket Atheists Meetup

Why do you want people to refuse to discuss religion with people outside the group?  I'm not a confrontational person; I don't start religions arguments, but if someone asks me questions, I answer them.  Many of the people have a lot of misconceptions about atheism and atheists, and I think that refusing to speak to them and answer their questions would reinforce a lot of their stereotypes (e.g. Atheists think they're so superior to Christians that they won't even speak to them, or Atheists avoid speaking with Christians because they are afraid of / angry with God).  The best way to show theists what we're like and who we are is to be friendly and open with them.

What about other atheists who aren't in your group?  Would we need to avoid discussing religion with them, too?
-Debbie.

Yeah that sounds good to me, I don't know what my availability would be, but I am interested.\\

Sounds interesting. I'm your guy.  I'm an atheist, rationalist, rugged individualist, and a quiet American.

You feel that many people in the general public are not aware of a viable alternative to religion.
You are able to wear a shirt with the word Atheist in big letters on the back.
You can refrain and refuse to discuss religious topics with people outside the group.
You will carry a few brochures to hand out to people who insist on knowing more about Atheism as an alternative to religion.
You like to go to public events like festivals, concerts, etc.
You can set an example of appropriate behavior at these events.

This is an exclusive group. If you agree to the guidelines listed above, your first attendance will be a trial to see if you can resist confronting people outside the group on the topic of religion.
