Atheists United At The Los Angeles Times Festival Of Books 2013

Location: University of Southern California, booth #162.

Once again Atheists United will sponsor a booth, number 162, at the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The festival will be held on the University of Southern California campus on Saturday, April 20th and Sunday, April 21st.

The festival began in 1996 with a simple goal: to bring together the people who create books with the people who love to read them. The festival was an immediate success and has become the largest and most prestigious book festival in the country, attracting more than 140,000 book lovers each year.

People of all ages from across Southern California and even other parts of the country attend. It is a free public event ($10 for parking), and includes exciting author events, panel discussions, children’s storytelling, cooking demonstrations and poetry readings. The Festival of Books also includes nearly 300n exhibitor booths representing booksellers, publishers, literacy and cultural organizations selling and promoting books and book-related merchandise and distributing related information and free gifts. Many of the independent booksellers participating in the festivalrepresent the diverse ethnic and cultural communities of Los Angeles and sell books of different languages and genres.

The Atheists United booth will host several atheist authors who will be autographing their books. The schedule is:

10-12 – Betsy Salkind signing her books More Than Once Upon a time and Betsy’s Sunday School Bible Classics.

12-2 and 4-6 – Herb Silverman (President Emeritus of Secular Coalition for America) will sign Candidate Without A Prayer, an autobiographical account of his atheist activism.

2-4 – Guy P. Harrison will sign his latest book 50 Simple Questions for Every Christian as well as 50 Reasons People Give for Believing in God and 50 Popular beliefs That People Think are True.

10-12 – Sikivu Hutchinson will sign Moral Combat: Black Atheists, Gender Politics and the Values Wars as well as Godless Americana: Race and Religious Rebels.

12-2 – Steven Paul Leiva will sign Traveling in Space, a first-contact novel written from the point of view of the aliens.

2-5 – David G. McAfeewill sign Mom, Dad, I’m An Atheist: The Guide to Coming Out as a Non Believer.

Visitors to our booth will find free literature including copies of our newsletter, Rational Alternative, brochures and a variety of displayed items for sale: atheist books, bumper emblems, lapel pins and DVDs. We will offer visitors a sign-up sheet and business cards for those who want to know more about AU and wish to attend an upcoming meeting.

We urge you to pick up that insert. It will also be available free at each campus entrance on the days of the festival.

Mighty mighty! The Festival is awesome for any reader, of course, and this year AU saw another record-breaking level of interest at our booth. Lots of thoughtful people checking out our books and having interesting conversations. Good times.

First Rate. We gathered many, many email addresses to receive out newsletter. Had many great conversations -- even with theists who seem perplexed as to how someone could not believe in a supernatural being who was concerned with your mundane day-to-day selves.
