Buford Dam to Abbotts Bridge (14 miles)

Buford Dam – Abbotts Bridge (14 miles)

This is an easy 14 mile, 5 – 6 hour including the lunch, paddle. We'll meet at 8:15 for breakfast  then go paddle. If you don't want to join us for breakfast you can meet at Buford Dam at 9:00.

You are going to get wet at Rescue Rock so spray skirts are recommended. Between Buford Dam and the Hwy 20 Bridge PFDs are required to be worn and that's the law! This is a fun trip for learning how to paddle a kayak around or sometimes over river rocks.

Bring a lunch and plenty to drink (no glass allowed on the river). We'll takes breaks when needed and stop for lunch at the famous "Beanee Weenee Rock". This is also a great social time to laugh and talk about the trip, what happened or almost happened, who got splashed or who went swimming.

Make sure you are ready to spend time in the sun with hat, sunglasses on lanyard, sunscreen or protective clothing.

We'll meet at 9:00 AM at Buford Dam to drop boats then drivers only will shuttle cars to Abbotts Bridge.  Abbotts Bridge is a CRNRA park so be sure to bring your CRNRA parking pass or $3.00 for parking.

If you have questions or need more information please contact Glen Smith,[masked], [masked]. If I don't have your email address and phone number please get them to me so that I can contact you if there are any late changes.

P.S.   The "not attending" list intended is for those that originally RSVP Yes but change to No.  If you don't RSVP Yes, please, I assume you are not going.

Kudos go out to Glen for organizing a flawless paddling event on Saturday. Stellar river and weather conditions combined with a great group of kayakers made the day most enjoyable.

It was great to get on the water with a congenial group. I had never paddled the section of river between Buford Dam and McGinnis Ferry, so that was very exciting for me.

Great to meet new people and to see old friends. The weather was great except that two people got too hot and had to cool off.

Glen, I completely agree with being removed from this event, due to my "no show" at the last one. It's only fair to be held accountable for commitments

Hi, wondering what's best a 12.5 or 9.5 foot Kayaking

    May 29, 2013

    • Glen S.

I'd bring the 12.5' boat for the miles after the shoals at Bowman Island and Rescue Rock.

I can bring my 16' Canoe if you two want to borrow that. It does fine on this stretch. Let me know.

So, just to make sure as I know it says its recommended but its OK that I don't have a spray skirt?

    May 26, 2013

    • Suzi

It's more than fine. You will get wet going through the one big drop with a wave train; if you end up with a lot of water--we will help you bail it out!

Question. Can anyone describe a bit more Rescue Rock? Would it be suitable for a 17' Wenonah canoe, or is it totally inappropriate?

It looks like Jerry Hightower (or perhaps another ranger) will be leading a float down the river that covers the beginning of our paddle. We'll have to try to have more fun!

    May 20, 2013

    • Suzi

WE don't have to try; it comes naturally! ;-)

    OK--pray for NO RAIN!

    May 18, 2013

    • Suzi

Will do--I guess our prayers must work, since we didn't get rained on today!
