Let's paddle the Yellow River!

In the absence of access to lands controlled by the Fed, alternatives are in order. Please join a small crew of merry paddlers for a local adventure on this overlooked suburban gem. The rivers are rising today (Oct 7 http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Gauge2/detail/id/6812/ )! The plan is to meet at Publix located in Lilburn at the intersection of Killian Hill and Five Forks, Trickum Rd. We will drop gear at put it-in at the Killian Hill Bridge, move vehicles to the Wild Game Ranch at Hwy 78, return to put in and paddle for a few miles. Strainers...

I'm always up for a yellow river trip, since it's close to my house.... just need a little notice. I've reread this several times, can't see the Date/Time. I'm familiar with this stretch, it's mostly flat water, class-1 from 5-forks Br thru Killian-Hill Br, to 78 Br... pretty.
The section from 78 Br thru Annistown Br to Yellow R Park is pretty and a little more bubbly Flat to class-2 minus. [must port around falls at Annistown Br, but easy to do.]. It's easier to park and put in at 5-Forks Br, but that add a extra hour to get to Killian Hills Br. Not sure how you want to get in at Killian Hills since they built the new bridge... but I'm game to try.

Sorry I couldn't join you. I've never paddled this river but would like to. Hope I can join you on it sometime.

I'd love to do this after work one afternoon...or on a weekend.

Also, if you guys see trash worthy of a clean up effort, make a note of where you saw it. The Yellow River Water Trail may be interested. Their section near Porterdale had terrible spots. I don't remember too much except maybe a few things around 78.

Here are some links with information. Yellow River Water Trail picked it up and posted it. My neighbor did the maps. I provided some comments. Hope this helps!

Yeah, I might have gotten "sick" if I'd seen this last night! Although, I'm no expert. I went with veterans of the Yellow River. I'll be interested to hear how you liked the trip though. Take some pics--especially of the falls.

Andy, how would you rate the difficulty of this section of river?

This river is near my house. I wish I could join you! But alas, I am at work. We did this a few weeks ago. the Five Forks to 78 is very mellow and surprisingly scenic. I let my 9-year-old do that section. It was about 5.5 miles. The strainers were there, but passable with some squeezes and ducking. We didn't have to get out of the boats. The next weekend we did the 78 to Norris Lake section (10 miles) without my son. Very fun class II's scattered throughout. (We did portage the falls at Annistown. Hug far left going under the bridge.) There is an island in that section where I think the book tells you to go right, but left was more fun. Just sayin. I think you'll be able to tell when you get to it. Anyway, I think we only had to get out once on that section due to low water. We did this river after a summer of rain. I think your timing should be good. :) Have fun!

Wish I could, A. Life is calling me in a different direction this week, though.
