Re[2]: [opensource-91] Looking for a new venue for Atlanta Joomla

For me and others from Gwinnett county, that is not a convenient location.  Very difficult to get to since we would have to take back roads there.  The last time I went to the Chattahoochee Nature Center, it took me 2 hours to get home...let alone try to get there at 7:00 pm from here.  I would have to leave around 4-4:30.

Chris,

Yes, $80 per night and maybe $5 per head would be a lot more doable than $200 and $10 per head. If it's a really great facility and convenient, we can certainly take a look or give it a try.

I recall that Brent… however, it may be the best option we have given the issues we’ve had with moving about. There was an excellent facility in Alpharetta of Hwy 9 north of Mamsell that was run by the Roswell Recreation Dept that was going to charge the GNPA $80 for a meeting room with screen that would hold up to about 80 people in a classroom setup. Good electrical service in the room but I don’t recall wifi or Ethernet access to anything.

That location was only going to charge $80 a meeting and it was an absolutely great facility.  Maybe that would make it easier to collect say $3 a head at the door?  Free is good but we get booted out after a year or so and have to scrounge around for another option.

Yet another option would be the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell off 120 down on the river. It has many meeting rooms that we could use as well but again, it’s going to cost some money….

Best,

Chris

Chris,

We used to meet at Roam up GA 400 at exit 11, which charged $200 per nite for their room. We always took up a collection with a suggested donation of $10 a head, and we always came up short. One of the organizers would always make up the difference. So from an organizer's point of view, a free facility would be preferable.

No contact there… However, it is not far from me, I can drop in at lunch today and I can drop in and find out how we could work with them if the group wants me to. Just let me know.

I also had contacted Mercer’s campus on Old Milton Parkway which was close to the old Brew House we used for meetings at one time for the GNPA.org (non-profit) when we were looking for a meeting room.

They have great facilities in great lecture hall setups, big screens, etc. However, they charge money, for our group meeting at the same time of day as the Joomla group, the price 2 years or so ago was $400 a meeting. Plus more for AV gear.

That may or may not have changed but might be worth looking at.  Another possibility would be to consider charging some kind of fees to come so we can afford to rent a room.  I know there are several Alpharetta area facilities run by the Roswell Parks department that have rooms for about $80 we could easily fit in with easy access and great support.  The GNPA rents a room for 130 or so at Mansour Center in Marietta by the Big Chicken for $150 a month with board room available for free for board meetings.

Hope this helps,

Chris Dekle

Does anyone have a contact at Lanier Technical College off of GA. 400?

Steve,

as there are many users' groups that meet at Matrix, let's see if any of the other organizations find a new home and see if we can also use it.

Thanks for the quick feedback, guys.

Certainly it would be great to continue in the Alpharetta area as we get 50-60 people each month in Alpharetta.

With a good location, it might even be possible to add a second meeting on the east of Atlanta.

I think our best bet might be to see what our options are for good locations and then go from there.

It is an interesting thought.  GA Gwinnett College is a real hike for many.

But along those lines does anyone have a contact at GA Perimeter College or others?  Possibly University of Phoenix.

Many thanks indeed, Todd.

That's a very attractive option. Yes, please do feel free to find out more.

We work heavily with and are affiliated with the Georgia Gwinnett College School of Science and Technology located in 1000 University Center Lane, Lawrenceville, GA.  I believe they would be willing to donate a sizable classroom (50-75 seats) or one of the larger auditoriums (100’s of seats) in an effort to support the organization and bring attention to their fledgling web design/development program.  I think it could be immensely beneficial  for both organizations.  What do you think?

Should I continue to pursue this for the group or drop it?

Let me know so I know how to proceed!

Hi Todd

Around 50 for an average meeting.

Yes, Perimeter has worked well but anywhere along the north side of 285 could be a good option.

Hi Everyone,

Matrix Resources have been an outstanding host for the Atlanta Joomla group and for other tech meetups.

Matrix really have been a key factor in helping our group grow.

However, all good things must come to an end. At the end of October, Matrix are moving and will no longer be able to host tech meetups.

As with everything else, Matrix have been very helpful and have given us three months to find a new venue.

So, please put on your thinking caps. If you have any ideas for where we could meet, starting in November, please let us know.

Regards

Steve
