Get your LAN on the weekend before DragonCon!

What games we play?
We get this question a lot. The answer is: a lot of things.
The "regular" games: Team Fortress 2, Supreme Commander, UT2004-Carball, Artemis
The "irregulars":  Starcraft(II), Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, <insert random Steam game here>, Rise of Nations, etc.

Expect more Starcraft 2. Borderlands, and whatever we come up with :-)

WHAT YOU GET:

  • A Seat at our LAN event (table footprint: 36"W x 30"D... ish)
  • A LAN connection
  • All-you-can-drink soda (tell us your favorite when you register)
  • Dinner (usually Pizza, or whatever the group decides on)

VENUE NOTES:

  • This is a private residence, please clean up after yourself.
  • Allergen Info: There is a cat in the house.
  • Crash space is available for those who want to stay late and not drive home right away; let us know if you need it (bring a sleeping bag).
  • There is a 30Mb cable internet connection.
  • A HTPC and Media Server are available.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Your Computer with a wired network interface. (this is obvious, right?)
  • Protip: Configure your computer's WIRED interface for "Automatic/DHCP" The most common problem at setup is a statically-assigned IP address fouling up the works.
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard, mouse, joystick, game pads, etc.
  • Your mouse pad (the tables are NOT optical/laser mouse friendly).
  • Headphones with or without microphone (expect voice chat to be used)
  • Power strip and all applicable power cords.
  • Your windows, driver and game CD's.
  • UPDATED Virus protection (Microsoft Security Essentials is your friend).
  • A good attitude and friends (both we also have plenty of :-) )
  • Snacks and other goodies are always appreciated.

WHAT NOT TO BRING:

  • SPEAKERS (Speakers of any sort are discouraged due to the close proximity of everyone, and the tendency for people to bring sub-woofers...)
  • Viruses, Trojans, worms, etc (scan your machine before plugging in)
  • Adware, spyware, etc.
  • Hubs, switches, routers, access points, etc. (these are provided). Any rogue network equipment will be smited by the Network Gods <g>.
  • Port scanners, packet bombers, encryption crackers, aimbots, wallhacks, etc.

RULES:

  • NO SMOKING in the building. Before lighting up, go outside. It's not only common courtesy, it's the law.
  • No porn. If anyone is offended and/or complains, then it MUST go. Just be reasonable.
  • Anyone caught cheating, packet bombing, roughhousing, stealing or messing with other people's property without permission WILL BE EJECTED - NO refunds, NO second chance! We are very serious about this one.

IF YOU SIGNED UP AND CAN'T MAKE IT:
It happens. Traffic, work, dead boxen and domestic overunits can all put a wrench in the works at the last minute. If you cancel 7 days before the event you will get a refund. Anyone cancelling within 7 days of the event or not showing up will be credited for the next event.

OK, guys, gonna need a table or two for this one.
I have 6 (7 if I push it) spots on folding tables and room for 4-6 on my dining room table depending on how much everyone likes each other. Need a table or two.

    OK, guys, heads up!
There is a chance. A 50/50 chance at this moment, that i may need to cancel the event.
Work has put a gun to my head this week and I may be stuck working Saturday. It wouldn't be such a huge deal this close to DragonCon, but i am missing 3 work days next week as it is...

The September 14th event is still on (RSVP here: http://www.meetup.com/atlantalan/events/121180912/) As of this writing there are only 5 signed up for it. What gives?

    To the newbies:
This doesn't happen often, so far every time I've given the "work is threatening to make me work a LAN Saturday" I've been able to pull a rabbit out of my hat.

Questions and comments about this event? leave them here.
Questions about the 9/14 event and its unusual (and temporary) shift in age policy, pop them in a thread over there and I'll answer them as best I can over an open channel.

Keeping my fingers crossed we can still make this event happen

If anyone wants battlefield 3, I've got an extra code for it thanks to the humble bundle.

I have a friend that might want to join us. Is this cool? I just wanted to make sure.

it says 10 in the morning to 1 after midnight, does that mean its an all day thing? and if so, i take it we should eat breakfast before hand? can we bring our own food too if its all day?

    August 8, 2013

    • Travisemo

      Cool.

Doors open at 10. Most show between then and noon. The pizza "lunch" usually is ordered around 1 unless people are really late in which case it becomes dinner.
Things wrap up between 11 and midnight most months.

Hello, I'm new to the group as well. Looking forward to this event! Orginally from Atlanta, but lived in Milwaukee for about 10 years before returning this year. Just got all the aforementioned games from steam so pretty excited.

One thing to remember. Origin is not a "Steam Alternative" It is EA's poor, crappy wannabe Steam-like pile of spaghetti code.
      Steam > Origin

I got Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion during the Steam Summer Sale....and I have been hooked. I'm still learning the tech trees and figuring out how everything works, but I really am enjoying the game!

I remember someone saying that you normally play Sins, so I just wanted to say I'm totally down for a Sins game if that is in the party mix this time!

    • Sean P.

Animal Crossing is the reason I want to streetpass. Maybe we should swap want items we are looking for to see if we can have them ready for streetpass.

    August 1, 2013

    • Sean P.

We should be able to get at least a full squad going for some objective gameplay

      August 2, 2013

We've got a treat coming at this one.
Artemis SBS 2.0 is coming out August 14th, so we HAVE to play it now.

    from the web site:
    ---
By popular request, there is now a full-fledged PVP mode, where any number of sides and teams can battle each other in arena sectors that can be tuned to limit torpedo and ship types, as well as the number of NPC ships on each side.

Pathing AI has been added to all NPC ships. No longer can players rely on the stupidity of enemies that blunder into black holes and minefields.

Artemis ships play in real 3D now, with climb/dive controls (button, keyboard, and joystick). Players can fly OVER a black hole, and come up underneath enemies.
    ---

PvP mode? Ai that might have more of a brain. 3D maneuvering... DO WANT
I don't know about you guys, but I'm excited :)
As with the first game, I'll take care of buying this one.

Thinking about joining up on this one. I'm not too big on RTS though, I hope that's not a problem. I am looking forward to Artemis.

We play more than just RTSes!

Hi guys! I'm new to the group and looking forward to the my first event. I was wondering, which Supreme Commander game do ya'll play? Hoping to grab it on Steam before the sale ends. Thanks!

    3 · July 22, 2013

Avoid Supreme Commander 2 at any and all costs.

      July 22, 2013

    • Sean P.

Thanks for the quick response! I grabbed it on Steam.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
