How Google Wave Changes Everything (or not)

Atlanta Web Entrepreneurs July 2009 Meetup

Did you miss out on iPhone Apps and Facebook Apps and cede the opportunities to the first movers?
Then pay attention to Google Wave!

If you've heard of Google Wave yet thought "This must just be Google's attempt to get in on the Social Media game" or worse "I don't need another {whatever}!" then think again. Wave is very different.

3rd Wave of Internet Innovation?

Wave has the potential to become the "3rd wave" (pun intended) of innovation on the web after DotCom and "Web 2.0." Wave is a open protocol and an open-source client and server that allows anyone to offer a federated Wave service. In many ways Wave with its own protocol and client+server architecture mirrors that which kickstarted the DotCom era, the HTTP protocol and client+server, yet combines the web's best ideas to date in a more efficient and effective manner then a web browser can. Wave offers a significant potential for new innovation on the Internet and thus huge protentional opportunities.

The "Communcations Browser"

What a user will see when using Wave will look similar to Microsoft Outlook but it will instead combine email, instant messaging, photo sharing, threaded discussions, collaborative editing, version control ... and more.(*) While trying to grasp Wave Urvaksh Karkaria of the Atlanta Business Chronicle coined the term "Communications Browser" to describe a Google Wave client. This contrasts with "Web Browser" and highlights just how significant Wave could be.

Wave Opportunities Abound!

This meetup will help you understand why Wave is different and allow you to brainstorm Wave's potential with some of the sharper thinkers in Atlanta. We will discuss the business opportunities promised by Wave in three major areas:
  • Collaboration within and between organizations,
  • Competing on the real-time web, and
  • Trading in the ecosystem of Wave extensions.

A Rare Live Demo of Google Wave!

We will provide a demo that will include a brief view of Wave used to put together a presentation. Be sure to bring your Twitter-enabled laptop or phone as we plan for your Tweets to be part of the demo.

Who should attend

Startup-oriented entrepreneurs wanting to catch the early "Wave" and business people interested in how using Google Wave can improve their businesses.

Format

The format for the evening will be short presentations followed by longer Q&A sessions.

My first meet-up and wow, how well organized and inspiring! Google Wave combined with WiMax will change the way we will collaborate, communicate, and do business a year from now. Google Wave will be available at the beginning of next year, while WiMax (aka G4) is already available in Atlanta.

Darn, I just circled back to this group after having the bug for another startup! I don't want to move to San Jose, so I have never been to the meeting, I wish I would have come. DO we have some ol' San Jose veterans here? Anyone, got the bug to create something with Wave, shall we plan a meeting of the minds after people think about it for a couple weeks? I already have some of my own ideas.. so would like to see whos in this space.

I'm [masked] if anyone wants to mock up a demo prior to the event. -Jay

Who attended?

  • 105 attendees
    •  A leading edge, highly conceptual topic/protocol was presented and discussed. Designed by the organizer to get the Atlanta Web Technology workers and entreprenuers thinking ahead of the curve. Well conceived and for the current point in the technologies development, gave enough incite and thought to get the conceptual entreprenuers juices flowing.
    •  This was a strong move by Mike, exposing a bunch of entrepreneurs to a raw technology that we can't have. After the break, about half the people still hung around and got into a pretty heated discussion; fantastic energy, and about 20-30 people showed up at the bar afterwards. I got six business cards from people with similar interests who want to get together on projects. Absolutely successful meetup.
    •  I really enjoyed the speech by Rick Thomas and the comments posed by the group. I am a marketer and blogger and the fartherest from a developer, but I walked away with a great understanding, great passion and a great learning. I was really impressed the group was trying to be at the forefront and I bet just from some of the conversations in the room that I had, we will see some million dollar+ ideas come out of this.
    •  Probably our best meeting yet; thanks Mike for all your efforts.
    •  Love staying on top of the curve! Very interactive crowd. Following the Tweets helped as well.
    •  Timely topic, earnest presenters but poorly organized; more confusing than educational.
    •  Probably needed to be moderated more effectively, more preparation from the presenters.
    •  Excellent presentation on Google Wave. Made it simple for all attendees.
    •  If you prepare a for long time a presentation is usually short and precise. If you prepare a short time it is long and imprecise. Seemed the later to me. Saying multiple times something is hard to grasp doesn't help grasp it.
    •  Mike does a great job of putting together a valuable agenda. As with any creative group, it can get sidetracked into the ridiculous, but it balances out by generating some true gems of ideas.
    •  Good discussion topic, I would have liked to see more of an example of a sample business idea and an approach to commoditize a service or a bot.
    •  Rethink white backgrounds for demos ;-)
    •  The degree of difficulty on this topic was fairly high, since it is a technology that hasn't even been released to the public yet. Still, the presenters were extremely disorganized and lost most of those who were attending from the very beginning.
    •  Unfortunately, Google Wave is a very tough concept to convey to people, so it would have helped if the initial introduction/etc was a little more planned and thorough. It felt like the first half of the meetup was "lost" as people struggled to grasp what Google Wave actually is. This was my first time attending, so I'm not sure if it's always like this but it definitely felt a little too unstructured/thrown together. I think especially given the topic everyone could have benefited from there being a little more structure, at least in the first half of the meetup when introducing the Wave Protocol/Technology.
    •  As usual, great ideas and initiative were drawn from the group.
    •  Good overview of a new concept from Google. Generated lots of interaction and thought provoking comments. Presentations ran behind schedule but presenters tried to be cognizant of the meeting schedule
