Why you MUST have a Twitter Strategy

Atlanta Web Entrepreneurs August 2008 Meetup

This promises to be one of our most interesting meetings, so don't miss it! Read on to see why...

IMPORTANT!!!: See ADVANCED HOMEWORK at the end. You'll need to prepare beforehand; only 5 minutes.

Who should attend

If you don't completely understand how and why you should have a Twitter strategy this is one of the most important meetings you could attend this year.

If you are a Twitter guru, we need evangelists for Twitter in our open discussion. We need your experience to explain why Twitter is a MUST both locally in Atlanta and globally.

Format

We'll start with a short intro/overview to Twitter led by Mike Schinkel and then, God willing and the creek don't rise, we'll have two (2) video conferences. After the 8pm break we'll have a roundtable-less discussion led by our Featured Participants below.

Video Conferences

Assuming no technical difficulties or otherwise, these will be our two video conferences:

These are still TENTATIVE anticipating any technical problems.

Featured Participants

Our featured participants are prolific Twitter users who have derived great benefit from using Twitter both personally and professionally:

Evening Agenda

Our agenda for the evening will be as follows:

  • 6:15pm - Early Registration (for those not prepaid via PayPal)
  • 6:45pm - Networking
  • 7:00pm - Meeting opens; Group News & Discussion
  • 7:15pm - Introduction to Twitter
  • 7:30pm - Video Conference w/Triangle Tweetup
  • 7:50pm - Video Conference w/Twitter Luminary
  • 8:00pm - Break
  • 8:10pm - Discussion+Q&A w/Features Participants
  • 8:50pm - Closing Comments
  • 9:00pm - Networking (Optional)
  • 9:30pm - Drinks/Dinner at Gordon Biersch

Note we'll be ending a 9pm but will allow for networking until 9:30pm after which those interested can head over to Gordon Biersch on Peachtree for drinks and dinner.

ADVANCE HOMEWORK!

IMPORTANT! Do this NOW!!! :-)

Create your Twitter account(s): it's easy and free at twitter.com. Create Twitter accounts for both you personally -- typically using your full name -- and your brand; having both can be valuable.

Now configure your personal Twitter account for your cell phone at twitter.com/devices (log into your Twitter account for this.) Optional: Set for "Direct Messages Only"

Next, issue the following command from your Twitter home page (twitter.com/home):

follow atlantaweb

Why follow?
I'll provide a printed list of everyone who follows atlantaweb by Wednesday Aug 20th and I'll distribute that to everyone who attends the meeting so they can all follow each other if they want. During the meeting, we'll use the "atlantaweb" account to show how Twitter works.

@ionamerica: Thank for the comment. To be fair, it was our first video conference so I was actually proud that it worked at all! Besides, the best part was Sanjay, Tessa, and Paul. Those three did a great job, no?

This was a great meeting even though I couldn't really understand what Wayne Sutton was saying.

Looking forward to meeting a lot of people. We have actually just launched Regator.com and we have been pretty much unaware of the Atlanta Startup community. That said, last week we were featured on TechCrunch, Mashable, ReadWriteWeb, Inquisitr and many more last week when we went into public beta with exceedingly positive reviews. Stoked to get into the community here in the ATL.

Marc, we'll discuss appropriate (and inappropriate) use of Twitter for business.

I'm looking forward to networking too. I'm a bit skeptical about using Twitter for business. I use it for my personal socializing, but I almost loath businesses on there.

Who attended?

  • 106 attendees
    •  Mike did a super job. It was fun and informatiive
    •  My first meeting! (Finally, no schedule conflicts!) Dynamic, informative, interactive group. GREAT people! Definitely worth my time.
    •  nice content, relaxed delivery
    •  This was definitely one of the best sessions.
    •  Best meetup energy yet.
    •  The overall premise was really good, and there was a great turnout. In addition the people that attended were very interesting and diverse. It's a shame the video cast didn't go so well. Very few people could hear David Sutton and the delay with Robert made things difficult, but at least we could here him.
    •  Very good discussion, especially at the end. Triggered lots of thoughts about Twitter and business opportunities.
    •  That one was rather heavy on "guest stars" but lacking on content for me.
    •  The sound on the first speaker was horrible. I basically had no idea what he was saying.
    •  This meeting was very informative about the social network, Twitter.com. Mike gave us a good foundation for what it is and then had some great speakers do a "question and answer" session, which I found extremely helpful and educational. I see, now, how Twitter can be used for business and not just pleasure.
    •  One of our best meetings yet; Mike Schinkel hit a nerve - or an inspiration - with the twitter theme and Triangle Tweet + Robert Scobel. Thanks, Mike.
    •  I enjoyed this meetup - The twitter overview was basic but informative - I did learn new stuff even though I'm a regular user of Twitter. The video conference with TriangleTweetup seemed somewhat less informative - I felt they covered even more basic topics and treated the group as if very few of us knew what Twitter was. The video conference with Scoble was very informative. He shared some good thoughts and brought some good opinions to the table on Twitter and Twitter strategy. Similarly, Sanjay, Stammy, and Tessa were great. They offered some good opinions on twitter use, twitter strategy, and had some very relevant opinions for the entrepreneurs present.
    •  I'm terrible at guessing how many people are in the room, but I know by the time I showed up 5 minutes late, it was so popular I sent the tweet "@atlantaweb so popular with Twitter guess I have to be a floor sitter". In any case, it was a great meeting with quality information. The round circled chair session was my favorite. Even though, the A/V setup could use extra work it was still interesting having Wayne Sutton and Robert Scoble via video and allowing the group to ask questions of them. Again, the real value was in the discussion format at the end with Tessa, Sanjay and Paul.
    •  The only improvement I. Can think of would be to use some kind of speaker cable to XOR miceohone cable adapter so as to be able to output laptop audio to the room speaker system
