ATL Card Shark FAQs

1. Do I need to bring a partner with me? No, we have lots of members that come alone, you can play with anyone. And, if my partner is having a bad game day, I'm more than willing to give him up so someone else can suffer.

2. Are there any fees for joining the group? Yes. We charge each member $5 per year (January - December) which is used to recover the administrative cost of running the group. Some of our venues will charge a rental or usage fee for us to play at their location, when that is the case, a small fee will be assessed to each attendee which will cover the rental/usage fee. Meetup.com charges each organizer a fee. In our group, the fee is currently $180 a year/$45 a quarter.

3. Do I need to be an expert at bid whist, Pinochle or other games? Absolutely not, we have players on every level and we have players that are available to teach you any game that you want to learn.

4. Will I be able to play bid whist and spades? Yes, most of our members prefer bid, and it can be tough but not impossible to get a spades game going. We have many decks of cards available to switch up and play either game. We also have Pinochle, Tonk/Tunk, Dominoes...there are options.

5. Do you focus mainly on spades? No, we started out as a spades group, but our members are quite versatile and ready to play, most of our members play bid whist.

6. Is this a singles group, dating or match making group? No, we just love to play cards and if you happen to meet someone cool in the meantime...good for you.

7. Do we play for money? No, we play for fun, laughs and bragging rights. We host tournaments from time to time.

8. What if you have an odd # of players? We typically have 25-30 players at each game and everyone arrives and leaves at different times. We limit the # of hands or score at each table so that everyone gets a chance to play.

9. If it's my 1st time attending, what do I do? Ask for the organizer, or let anyone know it's your 1st time, and they will point you in the right direction. Make a name tag and get ready to play. If you need a partner, the organizer will help you find one.

10. How do I let other players know that I want to play next? Knock on any table that you want to play at and the players will know that someone is waiting. When a team loses their game, they will leave the table so you and your partner can sit down. Sometimes we run a list of who is next.

11. Where do we play? Various restaurants around town. Always support the restaurant by purchasing something to eat or drink. Please keep in mind, eating is not allowed at the game table. Drinks are okay at the game table, food is not.

12. Environment? Usually we play in public places, please keep the noise level down so that customers and management does not complain about the volume. It is great to set someone or run a Boston...everyone does not need to know about it.
