This month we have Microsoft and Mozilla talking about Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.1 respectively.

Matt Heller from Microsoft Redmond will be talking about:

IE8 has plenty of exciting new features for web developers, from Web Slices to Activities, to full support for CSS2.1 and in part HTML5 and CSS3. Paramount to these features is a brand new rendering engine that renders websites stringently using today’s web standards. You will walk out of this session feeling confident that you can take advantage of IE8 immediately, and with minimal work from you, your existing web applications will continue to work as expected!
Robert O'Callahan and Chris Double from Mozilla will be talking about:

Firefox 3.1 will enter beta 1 in September, due to ship late this year or early next year. The focus is on building on the strong foundation of Firefox 3 with lots of new HTML5 and CSS features for Web developers (including JS Worker Threads, improved offline apps, Ogg Vorbis and Theora <audio>/<video>, drag-and-drop API, text-shadow, box-shadow, media queries, CSS3 selectors, border-image, border-radius, downloadable fonts, CSS transforms, cross-site XHR, DOM querySelector API, and Acid3 improvements!) Plus Tracemonkey, the world's fastest JS engine.

There will be 2 sessions only on the night with our infamous pizza, beer and wine drinks in between.

So if you are interested in the future of the web come along. If you are a Adobe Flash/Flex/AIR/Sliverlight person, probably nothing interesting here because we live in our own world where browser and operating system differences don't affect us, rock on!

M happy that all those debugging tools are now available in IE8 as well as the inbuilt source code viewer. M excited about the javascript engine improvement in Mozilla and the css special effects. Might take a bit of time for other browsers to come up to speed with that. thanx john for organizing all this. Good stuff bro.

Should get someone to mention Chrome too!

Who attended?

  • 180 attendees
    •  It was interesting and fun.......Great to see IE head to head with Firefox......I did find the IE speaker somewhat dull, but I guess this reflects the browser personalities. It was a tad technical for me, coming from a design background
    •  Good talks from both presenters..
    •  The projector compatibility could've been checked earlier. Wish the speakers could have a longer presentation. Overall, good stuff! Thanks for organising it, John

Well done on getting such prestigious speakers. Microsoft was a bit uninspiring as I expected, but the Mozilla guys were great. Look forward to getting some people in to talk about Chrome!

Interesting to hear about what each has to offer
    •  Brilliant to see both companies represented. Fantastic that Matt from Microsoft US was there. Was great to see the different approaches taken and the discussions were open and honest.
    •  Was only able to listen to Matt Heller/IE8 - he's good, just a shame about the technical issues he encountered. It does seem the Meet has grown a little too big, with 150+ attendants, some of whom are talking during the presentation(s), which doesn't help nervours speakers and is disruptive for the audience. Yeah yeah, so I'm an old fuddy-duddy...

I liked it best when the Mozilla & Microsoft guys got their swords out and had a fight to the death.
    •  Good meaty stuff. The browser wars are ON baby
    •  brilliant. I just love these meetups. Thank you John for the effort and time you put into organising this every month for everyone to learn and enjoy
    •  Another great meetup, all really good speakers tonight.
    •  Some interesting concepts coming out of both camps, and good to see that everyone has common goals...
    •  Good and informative - perhaps it's always good to test every laptop with a projector before getting into the presentation, and also to make sure the demos will work entirely. Otherwise I though the presentation was very good.
    •  good info, good pizza, fine night. In a word - good!
    •  * Like all the End User features of IE 8 * Like all the Developer driven features of FF 3.1 Good on you both for making Internet so fun.
    •  The best I've been to, also the first I've been to.
    •  It was really great to hear talks from the experts, and their frank descriptions of the pros and cons of their new features.
    • Glen Ogilvie (+2 guests)
Really interesting. Looks like Microsoft is going some good stuff for a change. Firefox 3.1 is going to rock.
