An Unexpected Guest by Anne Korkeakivi

Clare Moorhouse, the American wife of a high-ranking diplomat in Paris, is arranging a last-minute official dinner crucial to her husband's career. As she shops for fresh stalks of asparagus and works out the menu and seating arrangements, her day is complicated by rash behavior from a teenage son and a random encounter with what might be a terrorist. Still worse, a dark secret from her past threatens to emerge.

Like Virginia Woolf did in Mrs. Dalloway, Anne Korkeakivi brilliantly weaves the complexities of an age into an act as deceptively simple as hosting a dinner party.(less)

I really enjoyed our discussion and the widely varying opinions of the book. I always learn something from our discussions, and we had quite a few belly laughs also! Great group. Great fun!

I have to admit I *really* disliked this book, and found Clare's personality to be terribly boring. Can't imagine spending another hour on this book via discussion - I was so happy when I finished reading it and didn't have to look at it again! (Sorry for the rant - it is very rare for me to be so annoyed with a book)

Peter - I might have enjoyed the ranting a lot. I'll keep it in mind for the next time I hate a book.

Meera, I did my best to do the ranting for you. I think the other attendees felt that I succeeded. Some might even say I overdid it - slightly....

This book provoked widely varying views. Kathy, Cari, Andy, Lisa and Polly all liked it. And even David was moderately positive about it. I was probably the most vocal of the naysayers but Suzee, Jolana, Leslie and Tiff were underwhelmed by the book. If I include Meera, who hated the book so much she wouldn't attend the meeting because it would mean wasting even more time on it, I think it was a probably a draw.

Peter lead the group in a masterful discussion of what was styled a 3 1/2 star beach book. Comments by old members (Suzee and Polly), newer members (Andy and Tiff), and first-timers (Jolana and Cari) fleshed out viewpoints and thoughts which contributed to my understanding. Great job. I laughed a great deal.
