Are you new to Austin?

I've lived in Austin since 1977. No plans to move any farther than commuting distance to this book club..

Do you prefer heavier or lighter reading?

I prefer heavy literature, heavy music, heavy movies, heavy thoughts, heavy people (no matter how much they weigh).

Who is your favorite author?

Currently that distinction goes to to Cormac McCarthy. It changes periodically. Mmm...just this week changed to Don DeLillo.

What is your favorite type of book?

Almost anything. I have even been known to enjoy a "young adult" book or two. Don't read as much sci-fi as I used to but still enjoy the good stuff. Thrillers are sometimes thrilling but seldom filling. Don't care for romantic or erotic writing if the romance has a happy ending or the eroticism is the whole point of the book. Contemporary literature is my favorite. I like contemporary fiction with historical settings. Or historical fiction with contemporary settings. Also biographies, autobiographies and memoirs.

Is there any book that you'd like the club to discuss at one of the monthly meetings?

Chronic City/Jonathan Lethem, Geek Love/ Katherine Dunn, Winter's Tale/ Mark Helprin, Blood Meridian/Cormac McCarthy, The Skook/J.P. Miller

I've always loved reading. It's heaven to discover a great author I have not read before. In my much younger days, I was known to read the backs of cereal boxes if nothing else was available. Now I prefer contemporary fiction to cereal boxes.

What Laneda is saying about this Meetup Group

This is an extraordinary group of readers. The comments are intelligent and insightful. The leaders do their homework and keep everything going smoothly. (Kudos to Peter!) There is an excellent variety of good book selections that I might not have run across on my own. There is always something to be learned from the discussions even if a particular book is not one of my favorites. I have enjoyed every meeting and look forward to next year.
